I'm thinking about starting a petition to send to Bushmaster regarding a great idea I just thought of. I think that most people would agree that a 16" barrel doesn't look right with a carbine handguard, so why not move the sight a few inches forward, and make a longer handguard and gas tube. Something between the full length and the carbine size. That way the length from the tip of the barrel to the sight will be 5.25" just like on the 20" and 14.5" barrels. What do you guys think?

This is not a new idea.  ArmaLite already makes this.  Personally I like the shorter handguards better, but I have each kind.

You mean like what Armalite did with their mid-length handguards that they use on all their carbines?

Your thinking.... but the result would be strictly cosmetic and probably would not warrant the cost to make the changes accross the board.

Ya never know though.....

Let's see if we get three people all saying "Now that was funny" all at once within seconds of eachother.

Yeah! What you want is the same amount of barrel sticking out past the front sight base as on a rifle. That way the bayonet fits the same.

This is why an M4 has a bbl length of 14.5" - so a bayo will fit on properly with the standard carbine/commando format. Same length from the front sight forward.

Wreck, if this was a new product, the bayonet doesn't matter as no bayonet lug allowed.

Not what I meant. Let me clarify - I like the idea only if I could get it in a PREBAN config! All my rifles are preban except for some highpower guns. IE, take my existing 16" M4 and move the sight, gas tube, and handguards 1.5" forward. All I need is the sight base, gas tube and handguards and it's done. THAT would be cool. An extra 1.5 inches on the sight radius, a proper bayo/accessory fit (not that I am some kinda gung ho wanna be mall ninja) would be nice. I don't know about a petition - just say you'll buy 1000 rifles and they'll make 'em for ya! [BD]

Wreck, just buy the ArmaLite.  All their postban carbines are made like this.  You could even legally put the postban carbine upper on your preban lower with telescoping stock, etc.

Rock River Arms makes a mid length 16" carbine.  Works and looks great.  They even have the mid length handguards in green, if you wish.

I think my preban disi looks really good. car stock, flattop, milled front sight. no more barrel burns. its like having your cake and eating it too. good second rife to my 24"

Are you under the impression that new preban uppers are not made anymore?
