Which is the better length?

19D

Sorta depends on what you want to do with it. Long range work would favor the longer tube.
The 16 will handle most other scenerio`s just dandy.

I like 20".

I like 20" since it looks nicer on post-ban rifles.  I have a 14.5" BM Shorty AK and it looks stupid with the full A2 stock, IMHO.

Get the best of both worlds (well, kind of).

Get a 16" free floated barrel, like a Bushmaster Vmatch Carbine.  The rifle is pretty darn accurate for a 16" because the barrel is free floated and not subject to any deflection by pressure from the handguard.  This is especially true if you get the heavy barrel that is standard on BM's.  Some say the fluted barrel is even better for stiffness and that it also cuts weight.  The camp is divided as to fluting is actually a detriment or an asset.  (It does save on weight, though)

The 16" barrel then permits use of the rifle as a CQB weapon or just all around handier.

The only thing is that bullet velocity will suffer because of the shorter lenght, but not by much and definitely not by enough to matter at short to mid ranges out to 300 yds.

16" is the better because it's more accurate (less barrel whip) and quicker handeling.

IMHO, the 20" non chromed makes a better rifle and the 16" chrome lined makes a better weapon. The longer sight radius on the 20" is something else that might figure into the equation.

You've got 'er pretty much covered here but I'll still through in my opinion.  My bias is to always go with the longest tube possible and get a good sling that allows a tactical carry (hands free, at your side hip high).  There are a couple of good ones out there check 'em out.

They (you know, who ever they are) say you lose about 50'/sec. per inch of barrel.  That's close to 200'/sec less  with a 16".  I've negociated some pretty thick pucker brush with my 26" Sendero and like I said with a good sling it ain't no big thing.  Walking around in a house I don't believe there is that much of an advantage unless you have a pre ban and can put the collapsable stock on.  Even in a car the 16" with a standard stock is too much.  Get a hand gun for close quarters.

I want something that I can use accurately at 100+ yards. most likely no more than 300, since at that range, Im lucky to even see the target. I dont need anything fancy or expensive, just a good accurate assault rifle to go with my garbage mouth AK, which Ive yet to find a way to jam :)

Gotta disagree there, for house clearing a machine pistol (MP5) rules the roost, second place goes to the CAR family of weapons, third would be a shotgun, and the handgun should be used to get to your rifle.
1st rule of gunfighting is bring a gun.
2nd rule is bring a rifle.
3rd rule is if you cant get to a rifle use your handgun to get to your rifle.

Well to each his own.  The MP5 is neither a pistol or a rifle.  You have to have a special license (I'm not sure if it's class III) even if it doesn't have full auto capablities.  It is a short barreled rifle.  I consider it to be closer to a hand gun with a stock.  Now were talking oranges and bananas.

If I'm looking to chase intruders from my home I go for the Sig.  If there out in the front yard it's the AR, 20" barrel.

I have a 16" dissipator with the (working) CAR stock and it is my choice for skiing and to take with me on the tractor.  But if I could have only 1 or it was my first weapon I would go with the 20" tube.

Unless you have a true collapsible stock a 16 inch barrel looks strange on an AR-15 in my opinion.  The 20 inch barrel looks right and is usually more accurate.  A 16 inch barrel is great for law enforcement and other uses where a more compact weapon is desirable.

But isn't it great that you can have a 16" & 20" (and 24") upper that you can snap on your lower to create your choice of the day. That is why everyone needs an AR. [smoke]

BTT...I want to hear more debate on this. Got a new Bushy lower that needs an upper. I don't have a 223 as of yet. Like my AR10 and My M1a. ANother rifle or a carbine? 16 or 20? Stay or go?

I vote for the 20".  It is still short enought for self defense but long enough for competitive shooting, etc..

I'd go with a 16" Bbl on an AR. For anything outside, say...300 yds, I'd hope I had my M1A.

16" if you are not an acuracy-gotta-put'em-all-in-one-hole kinda guy. 16" if ya wanna save a little weight.16" if ya wanna carry it a lot. The older I get, the better idea light guns seem.

508mm is the way to go - it is the length the 5.56mm weapon system was desigend to use.  in 7.62mm however i prefer 469mm as the added length is not necessary.  also in the longer barrel you ears will thank you.  ture the shorter barrel is better for 'house clearing' but how often do you do that and shouldn't you have transitioned to your side arm for that?

406mm barrels look shorter with the shorter handguards - but when you put them side to side - the 76mm's saved is no biggie compared to what you are loosing out on performance wise.

Let's not forget here, if we're talking about weight here, you can alway's go with the government profile barrel. I've got a 20" government profile, and it weighs as much as my Bushmaster 16" H-Bar.

OT: I had one of those metal handguards, but it heated up REAL fast when you shoot a mag of ammo 1 shot per 1-2 seconds.  I had to change mine back to the standard.

I just sold my 16" Bushy fluted HBAR upper to finace my new project- a 14.5" M4 profile upper w/ 1.5" brake attatched.  If it's good enough for SOCOM, it's good enough for me.
Besides, 16" just looks weird.
