Posted about leaving my TC omega stainless barrel smoke stick un-cleaned for a year. Will see later if it's totally screwed after soaking for a few days.
I wouldn't mind buying a new muzzleloader anyway so thought I'd ask y'all. Going to use 777 pellets, Remington kleenbore primers since I already have em. Thumbhole stock preffered. Whatcha got, what should I buy? |

Rem 700 MZ, send it to Luke at arrowhead sports and have him do a smokeless conversion. You will never need another mz!
ETA, that link posted above is for the newest version of remingtons mz. For the same money that one costs, you can pick up one of the old original 700 mzs, (200 bucks or so) send it to luke for a pacnor stainless 45 bbl, a new bolt nose, new breechplug to the tune of 800 bucks or so and have a hell of a lot better gun than you can buy anywhere! |

Very hard to beat a TC Encore with a .50 cal blackpowder muzzleloader barrel.
|
|
Probably not the cheapest options, but barrels are replaceable. That said, most of the people I know who do that do it to change twist rates. Patch and ball (competition) require much slower twist than most current barrels designed for bullets
|
|
Hard to beat TC Muzzle loaders. Ditch the pellets and those primers however. Go with Blackhorn 209 and CCI209M primers. You'll thank me later.
With the pellets you get a couple of shots with out being able to get a round down the barrel. With BH209 I can shoot all day and not have to swab between shots with out a loss of accuracy. Plus you can tune loads a lot better with lose powder. J- |

I have one muzzleloader, a Traditions Ultralight. Solid gun, weighs 5 pounds, 26" barrel. Paid $160 for it NIB on sale a few years ago.
Whatever you pick, try Blackhorn 209 with a standard shotgun primer. Once you go Black(horn) you'll never go back. |
|
Look at Thompson Center, CVA, or Traditions depending on budget and features you are looking for. Thompson Center has a new hammerless muzzleloader that is a good looking rifle. Pick up some Blackhorn 209 powder and CCI 209 Magnum or Federal 209A primers depending on what your gun likes. Blackhorn is a lot easier to clean up than Triple Seven.

A local gun shop recommended the Traditions Vortec.
I thought Traditions was a low level black powder gun manufacturer. |
|
Stick with T/C and get an Encore. Barrel swap to centerfire is kinda nice. I'd also get away from the pellets. Get a couple of speedloaders & use American Pioneer loose powder. I think you'll see more consistent accuracy.

I use a traditions northwest model, I loved that thing.
No scope/exposed primers required in WA, etc I use 777 (loose powder) and have never had a misfire outside of the range where I was shooting dozens of lead balls and not doing any cleaning. ETA: I also have not tried bh209 because we can't use 209 primers here for ml season. I use musket caps. Nothing too modern, which is kind of the way it should be. |

I wanted to stay with TC, but I do not need interchangeable barrels. I'm pretty well covered on the centerfire front. I like the pistol'ish grip of the Encore. Spendy, though. How accurate do you have to be measuring powder? I've only used pellets. View Quote I think your current SS barrel will be fine though. http://www.cabelas.com/product/CVA-MUZZELLOADER-SPEEDLOADER/1978105.uts?searchPath=%2Fbrowse.cmd%3FcategoryId%3D734095080%26CQ_search%3Dblack%2Bpowder%2Bspeed%2Bloader |

T/C Impact and Blackhorn 209. Cheap, accurate, and easy to clean.

By modern muzzleloader you mean a rifle that uses them newfangled caps instead of the flint like God intended?
|
|
I have a NEF muzzle loader barrel for my old single shot shot gun.
I ditched the stupid original cap holder setup and put an aftermarket breech plug in, I also got an aft market ramrod. The think shoots great, is easy to clean and only cost me $50. It's too bad they don't make them anymore. |

If you couldn't keep the last one clean, don't waste your money.

Yep, the Encore feels pretty good. I have the older Pre-Pro Hunter version. I found the powder measure/loader I'll link below to be just fine for measuring and loading. Just tap it a couple of times to settle the powder. I wasn't near max loads, as around 110 - 120 grains was plenty of punch with nice accuracy with Powerbelt bullets. I think your current SS barrel will be fine though. http://www.cabelas.com/product/CVA-MUZZELLOADER-SPEEDLOADER/1978105.uts?searchPath=%2Fbrowse.cmd%3FcategoryId%3D734095080%26CQ_search%3Dblack%2Bpowder%2Bspeed%2Bloader View Quote No doubt those pellets are dirty as all hell, but the combo of 3 777 pellets, Remington kleanbore 209 primer,, topped off with a Barnes 250 grain TMZ are 100 yard 3 shot cloverleaf if i do my job. The whole "if it ain't broke" thing. I'll report back |

Quite trying to reinvent the wheel and sell your soul to the devil. Repent and use the Holy Black as God intended. Easy cleanup with hot water and dish soap

However, you have the potential for much better accuracy and once your load is dialed in it's easy to premeasure some loads from the comfort of your bench. |

Savage 10-MLII smokeless muzzle loader.
Launch your 300 grain projectile at 2,300 fps with no smoke and no fouling. |

Somehow , someway the barrel wasn't trashed. Took 3 hours of cleaning but it worked. 2 shots at 100 yards were right on the money. Thanks for the suggestions.
