I've been thinking about getting an AR pistol for a while, mainly because it would be legal to carry around in the truck in case I wantbto shoot a groundhog or a random antifa attacker. At first i was thinking 5.56 but everyone says that i would be deafened if I ever had to shhot it without HP, so maybe a pistol caliber would suffice. All I see in PC ar's is 9mm. I know ther are .45's out there, but judging by the posts in the pistol caliber section, only 2 have ever been sold compared ti the 10 million 9's. Why? Everyone knows the 45 is the superior caliber. Sure some like to joke around saying 9mm is just as good or even better, but deep down we all know the truth. Enlighten me GD! Why no love for AR's in .45?
TLDR; read the title. |

I expect OP knows this, but;
9mm ARs are easy to build using a standard lower. 45 ARs require a custom mag well to use double stack mags. A AR45 using single stack mags would be retarded. 9mm is cheaper for a fun range toy gun. |
|
.45 costs more than .223 and is weaker...
9mm out of 16" barrel has more energy than a .45. |
|
9mm was the caliber in the Colt conversion.
9mm is cheaper than 45 9mm holds more rounds Colt magazines versus what magazine besides Glock (they both can use Glock) for 45? |

The big problem with .45 in an AR is the magazine well. My Cav Arms gets around this, and other lowers, by being wide enough to accept grease gun magazines.
Now that Oly Arms is gone, it might be difficult to do what I did, slap an Oly upper on a Cav Arms lower, with an 8 ounce lower. That combination is very reliable. (At least until the ejector spring fails). It is also accurate, for a semi-auto pistol caliber carbine. Would I do it again? Maybe not, .300 Blackout looks pretty good. |

I was thinking about a suppressed 45 but am leaning to loading 147grn 9mm instead.

I have a CX4 in .45
A decent rifle with one main problem, the 8 round mag with no options. Fantastic at short ranges but if you can ignore the mag issue, it still has a serious practical accuracy problem due to low velocity drop. |

My punch can go full distance before you can even clear the holster. I also keep a tactical 22 in my wheelbarrow.

Oly (Olympic arms) built one in 9MM using Sten Mags which were plentiful and cheap.
They built other variations some using 45 using Grease Gun mags and of course some using UZI mags. Of course you can also modify Uzi mags for the Colt System. So it pretty much comes down to the original manufacture options that were available. |

View Quote Just google Macon Armory. Buy the full conversion kit, the DI one. Don't be a cheap ass and buy several mags. Done Love mine and my DI45 shoots way softer than my buddy's 9mm blow back |

i bought a palmetto ar45 a few weeks back. takes glock mags
been busy, haven't shot it yet |

Were have you people been. 1000s of AR45 style guns have been made and sold over the years.
There are at least a dozen AR45 options. Macon Armory makes uppers for a hand full of new .45 specific lowers on the market. Most designed to use high capacity Glock mags. Makes his own 20rd mag for use in a standard AR lower as well as magwell adapters. Most designed to use high capacity Glock mags. RMW makes complete guns as well as uppers. CNCguns makes a lower that use M3 grease gun mags that hold 30 rds. CMMG makes a new .45 caliber gun. |

Dayummmmnn!
Macon Armory wants like $900 or $1,000 for just an upper....PFFFFfffttt... My 6951 was like a thousand bucks for the whole thing. And now you can get complete .223 AR15s for $400 to $500. You can buy a reloading press and/or a bunch of .223 reloading components for the extra $500 to $600 you saved buying a .223 AR . |
|
My 9mm AR has way more recoil than I thought it would have, I imagine an AR45 would be the same or worse.
Having said that, I want one |
|
|
I really want to try out CMMGs new one. I would have bought one if I didn't buy an ar9 the week before they came out.

Meh, I just keep the 50 Beowulf pistol in the truck.
My ears ring all the time anyway, and I am -90dB @ 2800hz |

Been doing lots with 45 lately
FosTech ECHO AR-II Trigger with CMMG MKG-45 by a skilled operator for demonstration purposely only. More Here |

I love my AR45
I keep saying I am going to build a 9mm pistol but have not gotten around to it. |

You guys need to branch out of GD and actually check out the PCR forum we have.
Start here Then go to page 1 for the history lesson. I saved my lunch money and got Rudy's upper and the CNC lower. Grease gun mags can still be found cheap if you are patient. People will complain about custom gun prices, yet will drink a $9 coffee every day. |

I have an AR9 and an AR45.
The 45 doesn't do much the 9mm does at a higher cost and slightly less mag capacity. If you prefer one caliber over the other I would get that one caliber. In hind sight I think it was a waste to buy both. Is there anything wrong with the .45? Nope, nothing. Just not much benefit over the 9mm in my opinion. |
