I buy cheap new cars (under 25k) and keep them for 10 years or until they start costing me money in repairs.

Used to be you couldn't lose with a Honda product. In recent years I've met multiple people with late model civics who have had significant problems so I'm rethinking that.

What do you think is the most reliable cheap transportation available nowadays?

Honestly these days unless you drive a ton (or very badly

) damn near anything you can buy new is gonna give you 10 years with proper maintenance. )

haha I know, that said I've had two of them and neither ever once let me down through years of ownership believe it or not. The only car that ever completely, utterly fucked me was a 2005 Cadillac CTS with the dreadful 3.6L motor. It completely shit the bed at 55k miles.

Mazda is the sweet spot right now IMO. We have had a bunch and no real trouble with any of them and they aren't as expensive as toyota or honda. I had a nissan and was not particularly impressed.

145k miles at the moment. Nothing more than tires and oil changes up to this point.

What are you using it for? I've got 3 kids as well, and my commuter car/DD can't really haul all of them either; it has a backseat but it's tiny. It doesn't need to, though, it has no more than 2 people in it 99% of the time.

The wife's Highlander holds all of us; my car doesn't need to.

Toyota Corolla. I won't really jump to praise Honda anymore.

I've been happy with my 2004 crv up to this point, but Honda had major issues with their ac compressors imploding and contaminating the entire ac system. About a 2-3k repair. I contemplated getting a year or two newer as I don't mind older cars and hate payments, but Honda did not acknowledge it as an issue and it remained and may still even be an issue.

Their new aesthetics are also pretty bad as well on everything aside from the accord, imo.

Not around here, unless you don't mind 80K+ miles. I'm sure that's a region-specific thing, though.

If I could get a steady supply of 2014+ "big" SUVs like Tahoe/Suburban with decent miles that I could sell for 25 grand I could work from home... like two days a week.

The midsize sedan segment is imploding because people are moving to CUVs. That's where the best deals will be.

I'd look at the Mazda6, the Honda Accord, and maybe the Subaru Legacy because you're up north.

I have a 2006 toyota corolla 288,000 miles. Zero when I got it new at $18,000 in 2006.

Zero problems other than normal wear and tear. Replace batteries, Tires, change oil. Did have to replace shocks this year but after 280 thousand miles I think thats pretty good.

We've had our 2005 Toyota Corolla for almost 10 years now. I'm at about 174,000 miles and it's still running strong. The only major work I've had done is replacing the engine mounts. Everything else has just been normal maintenance (tires, front brakes, fluids, etc). We even wrecked it pretty good in 2011, but it was fixed and you'd never know it. I only drive it to work during the week, so about 12-15k miles per year. The A/C is starting to suck though. On the hottest days, if you don't park in the shade, it will never cool down properly unless you're driving 70mph. Park in the shade though, and you're good to go. It's been a great car, if not particular cool or pretty.
