Recorded in several forms including Wark, Warcus, Wirks, Work, Worke, Workes, Works and possibly Worcs, this is an English surname but of pre 7th century Germanic origins.

Jobs should make the list too.

After WWII, a lot of German-Americans changed their last name because there was a lot of anti-German sentiment. So if you see odd-transformations of a German last name, that's why.

It was the combination of his first and last name that had the "appearance" of being racist.

I met someone named Jeff, his parents gave him the first and middle name of Jefferson Davis, just like the racist highway, Jefferson Davis Highway. He didn't act racist or call me a chink, which was very nice of him.

I used to know a guy whos last name was 'Neggers' (Dutch).

When he got married, he took on her last name.

He wasn't embarrassed about it, and it wasn't for any PC, awareness or sensitivity reasons, just that
the guy knew what it was like growing up with a last name like that, and life would be much easier
for her (and their kids if they decided to have any), without having to cope with any misunderstandings.
