So, it's my buddy's birthday coming up.  I asked his wife  what he had been talking about buying for himself. She said M-7 bayonet. I found one on Amazon made by Ontario.  I know Ontario is a legit company so I went with it. 49 bucks.
Anyone own one ?

Don't own one, but by dad has recently been bitten by the bayonet bug. He wants a bayonet for all of our old guns.

If it's the actual GI M7, it's a pretty cool blade. I bought one a couple months ago from eBay that was a new in wrap Ontario issue bayonet, and I like it. There are many knockoffs out there so it all depends on what seller you purchased from.

I have a few M-7's. Have one in tan with a tan M-10 scabbard that came in a government stamped wrapper.
Apparently just slightly rare. Were issued during Desert Storm as I understand it, even though we had already adopted the M-9.

Ontario Knife is a legit supplier. Good to have buddies like you!

Surplus ones used to be $20 on ebay, but they are now $40+.

It is probably a better bayonet than the M9, but both should be a few inches longer IMHO.

I have an Ontario.

He'll like it, heck you should've bought another for yourself.

The M7 is what was issued to me, so that is of course my favorite.

As a bonus, it fits my midlength carbine and 590 equally well.

What's your opinion on it as a utility knife when it's not attached to the end of an assault rifle?

I got one to go with my A2 clone build. Bought it off eBay. They have a ton of them in there, both new and used. I wanted a surplus one with rack number markings.

Once I got an edge on that dull-ass blade, it has worked out pretty well. It's a GOOD utility knife, not a GREAT utility knife.
The blade's origins are as a trench/fighting knife, after all.

I like the m-7s and the new Marine one.

The m-7s are probably better at stabbing even though it's shorter. Spear point, narrow blade, with no serations to get stuck.

As a field knife it works fine. It's what I was issued. You don't need much to cut open MREs. I did also use a sog seal pup and a kabar.

I once heard that a Roman General complained to Caesar that the short Roman Gladius was putting Roman troops at a disadvantage against the longer blades of the barbarians. Caesar told him to stand closer to the enemy!

Sports Man Guide has used surplus M7 with Scabbard's for a little over $30 bucks right now, I ordered a couple last week, cleaned and sharpened and they are good to go.

I could swear the one I had in basic in 1981 was a Colt also as I don't think Ontario was making them at that time, but I might be wrong.. I think they were Vietnam era leftovers.

M7 will only mount properly on the rifle length barrel (not a carbine length barrel).. I believe..

Yep, that was a fantastic deal. Especially since it came with a brand new USGI M8A1 scabbard (the kind with the metal tip). Just the scabbards alone, if in new condition, are $30+ a piece. So you're getting a new bayonet for $10.

It will mount just fine on a *proper* carbine barrel (14.5") just not our stupid civie/non-NFA version.

yes, I assumed his buddy didn't SBR a carbine gas rifle.. I apologize for not clarifying..

I'm looking for an M9.  I already have a couple Colt M7s that I've picked up over the years.  one sits permanently on my Colt Sporter II HBAR.

I thought it would be cool to get a beat up looking M9 just to keep.. but I realized that if I'm ever explaining to my unborn grandkids how I used one, saying "Pretty much only in parades" doesn't sound as cool..

Happily I never used mine, and I'm extremely unlikely to ever do so.  But I chose the M7 to buy and deploy w/.  I'm unlikely to have to cut my way through barbed wire to get OUT of my camp.

The OKC is very nice - I wish Ontario would offer it w/o the serrations.  I bought one in Kuwait for my former Marine NCOIC, and have a pic of us together w/ crossed bayonets on our M4s.
