A buddy of mine recently "gave" me an 87 Honda rebel... well sold it to me for dirt cheap.
Spent some time getting tires, rebuilding the carb, new battery, etc., and now it runs like a top! Time to move onto the cosmetic issues.... I've got some "crud", pitting, whatever you call it on the crank case. Short of swapping it out for another one, what can I do to clean up this funk? A quick pic.....  Attached File |

Sandblast the whole thing and paint it

I would just ride it until the scars are hidden by road grime.

Sandblast or wire wheel, then paint.

Paint it with some ospho and brush it off.

CHEAPEST method
Simple Green and a Scotch brite pad. Then shoot it with this.

try some steel wool in an inconspicuous area. It does wonders on chrome.

Do not use steel wool on aluminum- it will leave microscopic bits which will rust.
Cases can be taken off and "Bead" blasted ( or other media, but not sand), then polished. A LOT of work. In place of polishing, there are a lot of paint coatings which will look really good (My BMW GS has painted engine from the factory). Lots of work no matter how you go- save it for winter!

I would probably start with 800 grit paper, work to 1400-1600 (wet sanding) before I brought out the aggressive polishing pastes.

Olympic Cerakote could do a GREAT job on that by the 6th try in 2019
