I would submit this as the contender for almost the best damn sandwich ever.  The plain old, incredibly good Southern Tomato Sandwich:

https://s2.postimg.org/xtvs0daa1/IMG_4510.jpg

White bread
Tomato (that's one massive tomato cut in three for that dish)
Mayo
SnP

That's it.  But it may be the best damn thing to be created for summer other than baseball, the 4th of July and string bikinis.

What did you do to that bread

Nothing wrong with a tomato sandwich just needs to be on toast knucklehead.

Other good sandwiches that can be considered the best BLT, Ruben,  Turkey club, Philly cheesesteak,  and one I stole from a good Italian deli: French bread with herbed marscapone cheese , Mozzarella, tomato, prosciutto, topped with a little bit of olive oil in a reduction of balsamic vinegar and fresh torn basil leaves and no lettuce.

I love a good sandwich
I LOVE a vine ripe homegrown tomato

BUT, I do NOT understand why the rich clean taste of a great tomato needs to be sullied with bread.
Just a touch of salt please, and I'm GTG.

You nailed it. Fresh white bread (not toasted), a big home grown mater that almost covers the bread, lots of mayo (no fucking Miracle Whip) some salt and pepper and that's it.

My mother would eat them just like that.  But she loved eating an onion sandwich the same way.  She would cut a slice of a purple sweet onion about half inch thick with mayo.

If I get my garden going again I will eat one just like you have it.  I would not eat a tomato when I was a kid but I will eat them anyway I can get them now.  I am trying to avoid bread now but I will make an exception for that .

Op needs to step up his bread game but a vine ripened tomato sammich is one of my favorites as well. "Best sandwich ever" is a bit of a stretch though.

Italian bread (I prefer untoasted), fresh mater, mayo, salt and pepper. That's it. No bacon, and no lettuce. This ain't a BLT.

Sometimes I skip the sandwich all together, grab a salt shaker, and head to the garden to eat a tomato like an apple.

as a person who grew up in the totally unsupervised 80's (where I discovered this culinary gem as a young lad making his own lunch in the summer), I'll submit the best sandwich between two slices of white bread is in fact PBJ&D.  Peanut Butter, Jelly, and Doritos.  Fact.

If an awesome tomato is your only ingredient you are ruining it with the bread and mayo.  Just sprinkle a little bit of salt and the smallest dash of EVOO.
De-lectable.

Slice a big tomato and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Take the bread you were going to use for a "mater sandwich" and make a pimento cheese sandwich with it. Eat the tomato as a side. Keep the mayo in the fridge. Bam, perfect southern lunch.

ETA

You can also sprinkle some salt on your plate and dip the tip of a green onion in it.

We've been over this before.

1) Cheesesteak
2) Muffaletta
3) Shrimp Po-Boy
4) Italian Beef
5) Reuben
6) Lobster Roll
7) Cuban
8) Italian sub/hero/grinder/hoagie
9) BLT
10) Club

Note: Crabcakes, pulled pork, and similar sandwiches are not considered in this contest, because their fillings can be eaten without the bread and the overall experience is every bit as satisfying.  The top sandwiches in the world all have something in common: Their existence as sandwiches, and the specific ingredients used, make the final product more than the sum of its parts.  Also, burgers, gyros, falafel, pitas, and so forth are all specific dishes, and not competing within the "sandwiches" category.

Also, a Southern tomato sandwich is inferior to the Caprese.  But that's okay.
