The inside of the tube, sure, circle. But mounting the scope in rings makes it virtually impossible to get the scope reticle dead level. Why wouldn't they make the scope mounting surface flat, and instead of rings use little Cs? As long as the mfg made it plumb, it would be impossible to cant off dead level.

Dunno anything about MFG a scope, but maybe it's really hard to get reticle perfectly plumb within scope body, and round tube means end user can plumb/level reticle to their firearm?

Also, I've always just eyeballed it and been just fine at the distances I shoot <shrug>

If you think leveling a round scope tube is difficult, you wouldn't have any fun trying to level a square tube.

The answer is, no good reason other than cost to do so.

Use the bottom of the turret (it's usually a flat surface) and a set of feeler gauges.  Easy-peasy.

Why not put lugs on the bottom of the scope tube that clamp into a mount.

If you have a round tube on the inside and you want to change the shape of the outside it would just add unnecessary weight and material. Additionally it would cause the problem of requiring proprietary mounts and nobody wants that.

Round is just more efficient.

The tube ID could be round as it is now but when the tube is machined, the OD could be square.

Then you'd use square "rings" and never have to worry that the it wasn't completely level.

I get it, but leveling a scope is not that hard and I'd assume that machining the tube that way would be more costly. It would be a good deal heavier too. Also, I'm no engineer but I'd assume there would be more stress imparted to all the corners of the rings instead of being spread around more or less evenly with round rings.

You could do this if you wanted to

It would be pointless, more expensive, weaker, and generally inferior, but you could.

Because there are all kinds of small errors in manufacturing. Having a square tube would mean the reticle has to be perfectly place in order to be true with the housing. A round tube allows for error correction in the scope rings.

All of this is miniscule, but errors always exist.

all guns are a little different.

making a square scope would ensure that almost none of them are actually mounted level.

a round scope allows you to actually level it.

also lenses and stuff are round and a square scope would look gay

I have an old Lyman Super TargetSpot fixed-mag scope, it was my Grandfather's, and rather than having a lug, it has a key rib on top of the tube that indexes into a slot on the ring(s). Of course, it's also an older-school target setup, complete with external adjustments on the rear ring rather than inside the tube...

I hang a plumb bob from the doorknob across the room, using a heavy black cord that is EZ to see through the scope.  Then as many levels on the gun receiver as I can fit along with one on top of the scope turret just for S&G.  My OCD side mandates perfect scope to receiver to horizon levelness.

getting a scope exactly level with the rifle is not the hugest thing in the world

the important part is when you are on the rifle getting ready to shoot is to make sure your reticle is level with the world (gravity) so the dope you put on the scope stays true.

lots of competitive shooters will have a scope thats not even close to level with the rifle
The reason being the way they hold the rifle in the shooting position wearing a support jacket or some type of support will cause the rifle to be canted, which means the scope need's to be "un-canted" from the rifle and level with gravity - not the rifle.

They mentioned the same thing in the art of the precision rifle.
I think its more of a gimmic sales tactic to get people to buy leveling kits honestly

Even cheaper than a plumb bob is a heavy fishing sinker and some brightly colored paracord.  That's what I use, although I do have a fancy fixture that clamps the rifle and then can be leveled using a threaded rod, so I only have to level the rifle once.

Level rifle, align vertical crosshair to plumb bob which levels scope and then slowly tighten the scope ring screws in a pattern similar to lug nuts.  I don't see what is so hard about that.  It takes as long to pull out my toolbox and set up my plumb bob as it does to level a scope.

Didn't Blaser have some kind of mount where the scope had an integral rail? I always thought that was neat. And exactly what the OP is looking for.

A square scope would be stupid heavy.

Round tubes are stronger than rectangular tubes and round tubes can be rotated to properly fit any rifle.

Mounting round lenses in round tubes provides more rigidity and strength.
