What about firing .38 S&W in a .38 special, or in a .357 magnum?

Would there be any issues in firing the shorter .38 S&W in say a combat magnum?

It won't fit.

38S&W case is too fat to chamber.

I don't think 38 S&W will chamber in a .38 SPL  or .357 IIRC.

It won't.  I own revolvers in all of those calibers.

Not trying to derail op's thread but, what about firing  38 super through a 38 special +p chamber?

Same size bullet, but the case on a .38 Super is .384.

38 Colt and 38 Short Colt will work.

38 S&W will not. Was originally a heeled cartridge like a 22LR. They made the case bigger to house the bullet instead of fitting the bullet in the existing case. Most are 363 plus in diameter

38 Super will work in 357 and I image would work pressure wise in a stout +P rated 38. For a while anyway

You can fire 38 colt and 38 long colt ( modern ammo ) 38 colt before ww2 was loaded with a heel base bullet and won't fit but all modern 38 colt ammo has .357 diameter  bullets. The 38 special case was based on the 38 long colt.

So in a 357mag you can shoot 38 short colt, 38 long colt , 38 special and 357 magnum as well as 38-44 which was just a hot loaded 38 special marketed to police before 357 mag came around. Just make sure you are shooting modern ammo as I said before the old 38 colt ammo used a .375 diameter bullet.

Good question.....

What got me to thinking about all this is the Colt Police Positive I bought a while back....  Like a .357 magnum, the Colt will fire both .32 New Police, ".32 S&W long", or it will also fire .32 S&W.

If I understand correctly, a .327 Federal Magnum revolver will fire .32 H&R magnum, .32 S&W long, .32 S&W, and .32 ACP.

I wouldn't waste .38S&W in it even if you could, it's hard enough to find as it is.

I wasn't a gun guy when I took ym CCW class. instructor talked about how .357's could fire .38 special and the magnum round was an improvement on the .38 special. I asked "uh since .38 special is" special" and not" magnum"  do they have a "non special" or "regular", instructor Joe told us about .38 colt and .38 long colt,  but that if we had any don't shoot them sell as collectables and buy modern ammo...

Nope, not legal in IDPA.  38S&W in a 38S&W revolver is technically not legal in IDPA.  You can shoot 38 Special in a 357 Mag but nothing shorter than 38 Special.  No 38 Long Colt or 38 Short Colt in IDPA.

Now USPSA is another mater.  38 Short Colt is second only to 9mm in Revolver division.  When they first allowed the 8-shooters to play 38 Short Colt was the number one cartridge.  Over the past three years the 929 and 9mm has taken over from the 627 and 38 Short Colt.  I am still running 38 Short Colt but 9mm moonclips are more robust.

Ive done it successfully.

This was the Magtech 38 S&W 146gr lead round nose through a S&W 638.

It was sold in the gun range as "low recoil" for those who want to shoot the revolvers in a light recoiling condition.

I will verify today when I get home again to see if they will chamber in my other 38s.

I noticed no issue chambering or firing these loads through tis revolver when I did it years ago.

ETA- Maybe the magtech isnt true 38 S&W?

Ill figure out for sure when I get home.

Pretty sure this is the stuff I have and it did work in the 638

What if you run the S&W through a Lee FCD die first. I bet that would make it fit. Don't know if its worth the trouble, but seems like it could be done if you had no other option.

You are correct.

Out of my Ruger .327, .32 ACP are fly farts.
