Or the oil or spark plug? How about the blade? Do you keep it sharpened?

One of the simple joys in life is plowing through tall grass with a lawn mower that is running in tip top shape. Agree?

About 15 years ago. A few years before I gave it to my neighbor and started having someone else mow my yard.

When I had a gas mower, yes, yes and yes

With the electric mower, I just welded a motor mount which broke when hitting a metal object. I was honored to take the whole unit apart.

I'm cheap. I just clean them......Dawn, hot water, a good rinse, let 'em dry. Good to go for another decade.

It's a piece of damn foam. It just keeps the big chunks out.

I use a 16 year old Stanley mower to mow 2 acres twice a week.

Bought it for 100$ in 2006.

It stays outside covered by floor mats and an atv tire

I change oil, filter and air filter every year.

And adjust the valves every other year on the 21hp briggs vtwin.

All my friends have offered to buy me a new mower out of pity.

Muffler rusted off several years ago.

Guy was at my shop a couple of weeks ago and heard it start up.

He said "only you would have a straight piped, cammed vtwin".

I said "nope, just needs a muffler and the valves adjusted".

I love that nasty old bitch, EVERYONE else hates it.

My wife and son refuse to mow with it and have both offered to buy me a new one.

I always buy a Deere maint kit yearly that has oil, filters, and plugs. I also sharpen the blades during the winter. I just got my current Deere this Spring and changed the oil/filter after 8 hrs. It will get everything changed again this winter before mowing season.

You'd be suprised how much of a difference it makes... Same with the cabine air filter in your vehicle.

Had a Honda riding mower, when a gf moved in, the mower moved to the side of the house. It always ran, but sometimes sounded sick. Bored, I changed the oil, filter, and plug, friggin' thing purred like a kitten. Good mower considering I treated it like shit.

Did it all this spring including new blades and fuel filter. Usual routine every spring though blades get changed every other year.

Never, in fact remove it. You will gain power anything sucked into the motor will be burned in the combustion cycle and spit out the exhaust as ash (carbon) run some seafoam through every now and then and enjoy your free horse power. I also split my muffler and remove all the baffles.

I bag my clippings and noticed I wasn't getting as much in the bag. Figured the blade needed sharpening (less than one year old mower). Sharpened the blade, no better. I took the blade back off and took a closer look. About midway from the center on both ends there was a small "wave" in the leading edge, both sides. I ordered a new blade and compared them. No wave. There was no other damage in the wave area but I must have hit something and buggered up the dynamics. I turn the mower over about mid season and change the oil, sharpen the blade. Usually let the spark plug go until I have a problem starting the mower, chain saw, etc.

I check the air filter before each use. There's always fine dust around the seal.

I cleaned it in the spring and changed the plug. I sharpen my blades every 3 or 4 mowings. The soil here is very sandy and it's hell on the blades.

My mower is on the downslope of its lifespan. The deck is falling apart and it's starting to burn oil so I'm thinking of replacing it. I only paid 400 bucks for it six years ago so it doesn't owe me anything.

I clean my filter as needed, change it when it appears to need changing. Change oil once per year. New plugs every year is a waste unless you mow every day.

I follow the schedule that I used when I did lawn maintenance as a profession, so roughly every 40 hours of use I change the oil, plug, and clean the filter.
In other words, once a season.
I do sharpen the blade after about 4 cuts unless I have been mowing wet grass, then I do it a little more frequently.

My dad had a mower he bought from a guy who trash picked them and got them running. It was the cheapest one the guy had and it had no controls, you turned it off by shorting the plug to the deck with a shovel. Once changed the oil and plug, lasted 20 years. The replacement was the cheapest store bought mower he could find and we never did any maintenance to it, I had it 10 years before it got run over. I replaced it with the cheapest one I could find and changed the plug and filter once after about 10 years.

We may have topped them up a couple times.

I change the filter, oil, and grease spindles every spring.
I shake out the air filters before I mow.
I'll change out the blades a few times during the mowing season.

I usually get two summers out of the air filter.

I bought my mower in 2001, have never done anything but put gas in it. No oil changed or added, no air filter, no blade sharpening, no spark plug. Still starts first pull. Snapper with 6.5 hp Briggs. Half acre lot.

Every fall when it gets put up for the winter.

Oil change
Spark plug
air filter cleaned (just a damn foam one)
and cylinder misted with oil.

Still runs strong no smoke after 20 years.

I do a once over every year ( filters, blades, oil etc) and just TLC (grease, wash, inspection, etc) during the mowing season.

I change oil every 25 hours or so, I clean and re-oil the air filter at the same time.
I have 2 sets of blades which I swap if dull when I remove the deck. That can be every two or three mowings. This year has been harder on the blades, the grass has been heavy and wet almost every time I've mowed. I'm also converting an old pasture to lawn, and I find a new rock almost every mowing. I've also had the problem of waiting over 2 weeks to mow a couple of times because it was raining when I should have been mowing.

The mower is a 1968 Allis Chalmers B110 with push blade, snow blower, tiller, and cultivator. Mowing takes about 4 hours if I mow weekly, 8-12 if I let it go a bit too long. So it's not unusual for it to be run 5-15 hours per week between mowing, cultivating, or and tilling. Last winter I probably ran it less than 20 hours moving snow.

I bought it a year ago and replaced the spark plug back then. I probably will do it yearly based on the number of hours I put on it.
