Did you know Jefferson paid his slaves? Standard practice, actually. Performing extra duties (cleaning stables, privies, taking care of the animals, etc), selling gardened food to the house (the food the slaves grew was theirs by right otherwise), working in profit-generating enterprises (principally the smithery)... all would get you cash money from The Man.
In fact, the slaves who helped clean the privies were each paid better than the (literate, white) schoolteacher. Granted, Jefferson was a shitty businessman, and he never could get his balance sheet right, but that's another matter. The point is, slavery was a symbiotic relationship, and provided more for both parties than either could attain on their own. More than that, it was essential. At least, at the time. Sure, it wouldn't last another 100 years (and laws against it would be in place within 20), but at the time of the founding of this country, there simply wasn't a better system available to take its place. This isn't whips and chains like on Roots. It was a whole bunch of people just trying to survive, and mostly treating each other pretty decently - all things considered. Life was hard as hell before the industrial revolution. It's practically a miracle any progress was made at all. I don't approve of their methods from a modern perspective, but I'm not so stupid as to think they had a plethora of other options. You gonna put all that nuance on the monument? At what point do you just say, "Look, if you want to know more, read some fucking books." |
