My guess is that most of the gold in any US vaults are tungsten bars with a gold plating thick enough for an impression test to pass. Same density, same x-ray, same hardness. Impossible to tell without literally sawing it in half.

I was under the impression that there was a considerable amount of gold in vaults under the world trade towers. Some belonged to foreign nations and some was a part of he federal reserve. When I heard the story, they were staying that much of the gold isn't actually at Ft Knox but stored at federal reserve repositories around the country. Any of that true?

Discovery channel had a show on this a few years back. From what I remember, all the US gold stash was sold off and everything in storage there now belonged to foreign governments.
