It's just a black bear, any bullet that he shoots accurately will get the job done with a 444 marlin

I shot mine with a 165gr in a 7mag
Poleaxed that thing. Only went about 10 yards. |

They're really no harder to kill than any other medium sized game. Most anything will work. Where at in canada?

I'd even be ok with the 240grain Remington stuff. Buffalo bore is as good as it gets.

The last one I took in Canada was with a long bow and hand made wooden arrows, one shot 27 yards, ran exactly 35 yards and piled up.

If Buffalo Bore makes a cartridge there's an answer. Not saying a Black Bear needs a Buffalo Bore grade premium cartridge, but it will certainly work.

Do not use the 240 grain load!!! I have shot a deer with it and the bullet came apart upon entry, it will not penetrate as it is a pistol bullet.
The 265 grain flat nose load with the bullet made for the cartridge is the minimum factory load to pick. |

I have had very good results with the Hornady 300gn XTP.
I loaded those for myself to be fired out of a 7 1/2" Ruger Redhawk for California bears. I'm not sure if somebody loads them for a .444 in a commercial offering. |

I'm not sure if you can kill a bear without using a 6.5 Grendel....
 
Any one of the bullets on the below page will kill a black bear dead. You don't need to spend Buffalo Bore money to kill a bear with that cartridge. Find one that shoots good out of your gun. 444 Ammo |

killed a P&Y black bear last year with my bow... 13 yard shot and it died inside 90 seconds... ran only 15 feet.
That said - they're thin skinned so i'd be comfortable with anything i used for a white tail... .308 or above? If i was gun hunting for a bear in canada - the way i expect you guys would be - i would do so with open sights or a red dot. definitely not a scope unless it absolutely SUCKS IN the light. My biggest issue was not being able to see my pin at dusk when the bears are most active... |

I'm one of those guys that thinks a .444 is too much gun for a black bear...unless you want to ruin the hide and the meat. For 100yd shots over bait, a .308 shooting soft nose 168's is more than adequate.
If you were hunting Kodiak's...that's another issue. |

I would say that's a bit much for a black bear. I hunt both northern MN and Ontario for them and I have seen bears taken down with a 5.56. I don't suggest that but it makes my point.
As long as he hits the bear within the vital area, he shouldn't have much trouble tracking as it'll more than likely be piled up within 50 yards. Happy hunting! |
