 Solo Stove Bonfire: Best Gear of 2017 This thing looks super cool and only a few more dollars than a shitty Lowes fire pit. Thoughts? |

Sees like it would be awesome to sit around as the smoke is minimized. Would be hard to cook over unless you fabbed an elevated grate, though.

I would just use it as a fire pit, I wouldn't want grease and junk all over it.

I have the next size down, the solo campfire, which is still pretty big. It's been awesome, so I presume the bonfire is, too.

Find an old washing machine on CL, take the stainless drum out, sit it on the ground and you have a cheaper version.

Dig a hole, line the outside with brick, and drop in half a harrow as the burn bottom.
I like fire pits that are not raised, they'll warm the toes while a above ground leaves you're feet with no way to warm.  Attached File |

Damn you ARFCOM. Guns, watches, and now a $300 fire pit.
I'm looking at this for car camping or cabin adventures. Twice a year I lug a cheap target firepit to YMCA events - they don't allow ground fires. The smoke sucks when it follows you. If anyone has one, what does this thing do to the burn speed? Am I going to burn through the wood faster? |

I have one of these. Its built like a tank. I like it because it's off the ground but sturdy. The heat radiates out. With some welders gloves, I can break it down at the end of the evening w/o worrying about coals.

Seems neat for little bonfires. Don't see that being convenient to cook on though.
We just got rid of our above ground pool. Putting a firepit in where the pool used to be but no idea how we want to go about it yet. |

Here's mine I built for around $100. 36 retaining wall blocks and 36 pavers from Lowe's for $66 and a 1' by 36" piece of HD galvanized underground culvert for $30.
Culvert guy said it was designed to last 50 years underground in wet conditions.

I have the small solo stove and it's pretty cool. Hardly any smoke, hardly any ashes. Throws off a lot of heat, especially with the windscreen set up to trap and direct it.
I've been looking at the bonfire for similar reasons. If it works as well as the small one it's probably awesome. |

 Attached FileI scabbed an old ATV rim onto a washing machine drum. It's amazing how well the stainless steel holds up been 5 years at least and no soft spots or corrosion. I would do something home made before spending a butt load of money on something store bought. YMMV. |

I don't have a picture but mine turned out great
Welded four leg onto a washing machine tub. Cut a 10" hole in the bottom. The enamel has held up good. However high temp paint burns off it so you are stuck with white. Put a small round grate in it. Cut a top out of 1/4" steel wit a 6" hole in the center. Smoke stack from a semi on top. Used smoke stack was $40 from the wrecking yard. Smoke goes up through the stack over your head. Also once hot enough you get a nice flame out the top |

Thanks OP. Just got a chance to play with mine after I saw this thread and ordered it. Worth every penny. Zero smoke once it gets going, which isn't long. Perfect for my needs. Such a clean flame.

Whats the deal with Solo stoves and inclement weather? Can they be left out in the rain or is this something you actually need to take care of (i.e. clean out and put away after use).
I like the concept of a less smoky fire ring, but I think I read somewhere that these need to be taken care of or they will rust. |

just bustin...i have an el cheapo steel fire ring from cabelas thats rusting away...8 years old at this point so no surprise...While Im intrigued by the solo stove, the expense gives me pause, but they sure do look super duper cool. |
