I was in Walgreen's today and heard some employees talking about the eclipse glasses.  One Rhodes Scholar said, "people be overpaying for eclipse glasses, but you know what? "Solar" means "sun", so they just sunglasses!"

I think this is how China is going to get us.  Counterfeit eclipse glasses on Amazon.  We'll be blind the whole time.

I thought that people see a solar eclipse every night when the earth gets between the people and the sun.

For previous eclipses I've used my spotting scope as a 'projector'.
Once you can find the image (takes a little hunt and pecking) it works pretty good

I tried my glasses out on the bright noon sun and all I can see is an orange circle and there was no discomfort. I think mine are legit. Lunt Solar Systems is the brand.

Better than pinhole, use a binocular to project on a sheet of paper.  How long can you look at the sun without damage? 2 seconds?

Fuck that i am doing the same thing i did last time back in the 60's or 70's "getting old and i tend to forget shit", use a box and cut a small hole in it to view the eclipse.
Yes we really did that during the last one.

This time i do not give a fuck i will be driving in to work 2nd shift and the only thing i care about is the idiots that will be blocking traffic to watch it.

Have you seen the warnings on Facebook for your pets yet?

People are actually telling you to keep your pets inside so they don't stare at the sun and go blind.

Every damned news story I hear seems to feel compelled to remind people it's not safe to stare at the sun.

It's truly disheartening to consider that there is a large segment of our population who are too stupid to avoid staring at the sun...and that the media believes they exist en masse.

Dumbass.  You're supposed to use a magnifying glass.

Look at this picture:

See how it focuses the light?  And then think about what is happening with an eclipse.  The light is BLOCKED.  Too see anything, you need to magnify what little light is left.  Put your eyes right where the black dot is.

Pass this info on to all your liberal friends.

I just did and got rain in my eyes.

OP, you would be better using a Spinner purchased from 7-11 than those glasses.

You ever drive home at that certain time of year when the sun rises or sets RIGHT in the dang same path as the highway you are driving is headed?  Yeah, millions go blind or get nerve damage every year!  It's a travesty!  But yeah, really, I think folks will be ok unless they use those fake ISO shit glasses ;)

A quick glance into your visual range as you turn your head is not going to hurt anything lol.

Every single person on the planet has SEEN THE SUN in the sky lol.

I remember being told in grade school...you will have to wait till 4040 to see another one...them 2 years later another fucking eclipse. Last night on the news the anchor called it a once in a lifetime chance, then showed a story of a guy who has seen 6 of them so far....

Permanent damage requires around 100 seconds and is so painful while it is happening that you wouldn't look for that long.  Partial and temporary damage can happen quick based on a number of other factors, such as having dilated eyes due to some type of drug use.  The intensity of the sun, time of day, cloud cover, elevation...etc all factor into how fast damage can happen.

Just drive to a totality part and then look at it with no protection at all during the totality.  That's the best way to do it.

I'm just going to wait until night time when the sun is much cooler to look at it.

Can't believe I'm the only one that has thought of this.
