"It's something that this community wanted," Katy ISD Superintendent Lance Hindt told KTRK. "I don't think the cost was anything that they really looked into."

But that title might not last long because in Texas, high school football is taken seriously -- and serious money is spent on stadiums.

The guy crying about it has a household income of 150-200k, on a "valued" 200k home, said it increased by 60k, so he has a lot of free equity, and purchased a 140k home.

Boo fucking hoo.

Everyone here cries about the skyrocketing property taxes every year, but they can't dream of little Johnny playing Pee Wee football in anything less than D1 accommodations.  Only the best for my little Johnny!

They are about $3.30 per $100 evaluation; but there is no personal property tax or income tax. A lot of places in Texas are in the 2.50 to $3.00 range. Katy and Houston area for that matter have municipal utility districts MUD that pay for civil inter structure due to the rapid growth and flood control.

What the story didn't mention is home values in Houston took a nose dive when the Great One, Obama came into office. They are now rebounding.

Don't forget that sweet 8.25% sales tax Texans have too, despite no income tax.

I don't live in that burg but if I did I would be trying to find a spot outside of that school district post haste. Property taxes are way too high. Oh and the equity thing? Whoopee do. All that means is even if you try to downsize the next house is going to have some inflated price and your money will be tied up there for the duration of ownership too....for which you get the privilege of being taxed on it.

If they are earning between $150,000-$200,000 a year they shouldn't need to look for a smaller home. They need to spend their money more wisely .

Believe me, they are not hurting for money in Katy, as well as many other nicer cities around Houston.

It's mind boggling how much money changes hands yearly around that area.

Texas high school football is a religion.
I live in a 35k person town, and our facility is pretty nice. Home games are standing room only, regardless of the team's record or the weather.

here's how this shit happens.   The school board and district hold a referendum vote on this.  They make daaaaamned sure to hold that off season - never on the same day as an actual election.   literally 2% of the population vote.  It passes - it always passes - because all the teachers,  contractors,  and football morons all go and vote for it.

I watched a quarter BILLION dollar budget increase pass in my district using this exact model.   2% of the population voted - that was it.

And can be disputed every year with astonishing success. My assessment went up every year for 12 straight years. I think 2 of them stood after dispute.

Property taxes are not bad in Harris County, unless you roll over and take it.

Not all of the school taxes go towards the local government either. Texas redistributes some of the school taxes to make it more "fair".  I think these multi men ion dollar stadiums are a sad waste of education dollars that should have went for something like a chemistry lab or technical education programs. I remember one school district I used to live in had kept attempting to pass a million dollar bond for a stadium for a small town of 3,000 that I voted against. I think they finally succeeded on the third try when I left.  I won't pretend to know football especially near a large city like Houston, who knows maybe they pack those stands and bring their cities money in from it. Voters get the government they deserve.  You can guarantee though if I lived in that district, I would vote with my feet instead of paying out the ass for something stupid like that.

I do, they are a distraction from the stated goal and suck resources from education. If kids want to play sports, they should do it on their time and dime.

I am from Texas, born and raised. I played high school football in a pretty badass stadium with lots of booster support for nice stuff and 20k people on Friday nights...

This is utterly ridiculous.

The older I get the more I think we should remove sports from school and turn them over to the private sector for club leagues. At the NCAA level you can have schools sponsor club teams so they still can have COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!!!! but the kids are actually paid professionals hired by the school and it can be the farm league for the NFL. Hey, hopefully, they can actually use this stadium unlike the $60 million abortion in Allen.
