I have tickets to see the Marine Corps Silent Drill Team this weekend.

They will be performing at Fort Henry in Kingston, Ontario.

I can hardly wait to see the show.  I just have to ditch Crabby at a nearby casino so that we can watch the show in peace.

My buddy was in silent drill. We went to go see them on a trip to DC one time. The guy in charge, can't remember if officer or enlisted, starts chatting the crowd about this and that. Everyone is having a good time. Guy in charge asks "does anyone know why the Marines wear this cord (aigillette) on their right shoulder?"

I'm pretty close, so I, being a 20 year old jackass, shout out "So they know which way is right?!" I think I got more than a couple of the Marines to laugh but who knows, maybe they were just drunk .

Flame on

We were supposed to see them when I was at Comm school in Twenty nine Palms. I think it was the changeover for the base commanding general. End up not being able to perform due to rain. At Twenty Nine Palms! What are the odds.
I'd still like to take my dad to DC to watch them there.

I'm taking Bimba to Toronto's best dog spa tomorrow.  I want her to look her best in case she can meet the Silent Drill Team.

I'm also getting her favorite USMC bandana properly laundered, pressed and starched.

And early on Saturday we will drive two and a half hours to Fort Henry.

And I am going to buy a proper camera.  I want to get proper pictures this time.

That sounds great.

I saw them once back when I was in middle school.

I need to get off my ass and go down to 8th and I one night.

Saw them when I as in (1986) and when I was out(2008)....Very impressive both times.  My girls were amazed and couldn't believe that at one time daddy could kinda march like that too.  At the 2008 show the reporter from ABC who had got blown up by an IED was an honored guest.

It is truly amazing to see a rifle suddenly fly through the air, from one marine to the other, in one seamless motion!!!

I wonder what kind of hoops they had to jump through to get their rifles into Canada.

I saw them at an airshow at the Pittsburgh 911th airlift wing a number of years ago.

Back in the early 1980s when I was in college, I was a member of a precision rifle drill team.   NOt Pershing Rifles.  We were only loosely affiliated with ROTC, and mostly only drew from AFROTC plus a few non ROTC students.   Not being affiliated with Pershing Rifles or ROTC we were able to use bayonets on our Rifles.
We went to a number of drill meets in NY, DC, Philly, NJ and MD and we always did very well.   The 8th&I Marines judges a number of the meets we went to.  They liked us as we brought them lots of beer for afterwards.
By the time I was on my way out of there, interest had really dropped off.  Even schools that once had very prestigious drill teams like Rutgers quit having teams for a number of years.   I think they may have tried to start again, but what I saw on YouTube was a joke of what they were once.  No bayonets either.

I wish I had "borrowed" a couple of the 1903A3s we used.   We had practice Rifles with plastic stocks, but used ones with walnut stocks for the meets.   Those Rifles all had working actions, but the barrels were plugged end to end.  I doubt any have seen use in 25 maybe 30 years.  Wonder what was done with them.

Section 14 of the Visiting Forces Act applies and the Marines are lawfully allowed to import their weapons into Canada.

I always assumed they were blank guns.  That would make logistics much easier when traveling, you wouldn't have to keep them guarded for instance.

Before the show I walked up to a Marine and spoke to him.  I had a good look at his M1 and it was live.

When I was in ROTC they visited our school.  One of them dropped his rifle, no big deal, they picked it up and kept going.   Afterwards in the ROTC building that guy got a massive ass chewing and did about a million push ups.
