Yes, the thread formerly known as "Morning Cupping With My Son" is now officially, another GD coffee thread.

More specifically, It's about roasting at home. Please feel free to leave resources and tips.
I will do my best to document my learning.

OP:

This morning my son and I did a small cupping session. It was a really fun experience!

I've been a "coffee nerd" for some time now, but never took the plunge into the world of roasting. So, a couple of weeks ago, I ordered some green coffee and a popcorn popper. I've roasters a few small batches now and have to say that it's miles beyond anything I've bought off the shelf, even when I screw it up!

This morning my 3 1/2 year old was begging to make coffee with the popcorn popper, so I decided to oblige him.

We grabbed a newly acquired bag of Ethiopian and headed out side.

We roasted a light roast and a darker roast. The light one was pulled about 30 seconds after the start of first the first crack and the dark just at the start of the second crack.

Now, there seems to be great argument over how long one needs to wait for the freshly roasted coffee to rest before grinding and brewing, but we did t wait. We did save some for tomorrow to see if it makes a difference one way or the other.

The light roast was super light, in fact under roasted I think. Good nonetheless. The darker one was the single best taste of coffee I've ever had! Amazing! So, I brewed up a cup and shared it with my son on the porch.

He loved it!

He asks for a cup of coffee a few times a week, so I think he really does like it. I have no idea why.

Coca Cola contains 35mg per can.
Chocolate contains 10-40mg per ounce (darker chocolate has more, on account of higher cocoa percentage literally contains more chocolate).
Iced tea is around 20mg per 12oz.

City roast coffee is around 15mg per fluid ounce.

3-4 ounces of coffee is around the same caffeine content as a Ghiradelli dark chocolate square, or a can of Coke.

Not that you should give a child an entire can of Coke (granted, plenty of parents do) - I'm just saying that the caffeine content really isn't all that much.

Any amount that a child would willingly drink on their own (my kids get bored of 4oz cups of hot chocolate before it's finished) is not going to hurt them.

It's just the cheapest one I could find on amazon. Apairently it's not the right one for the job, but seems to work fine. Drawbacks are that it makes a mess and blows a few beans out durring the process.

More importantly, the sugar content of the coffee is 0. Can't say that for the coke or chocolate (or juice!) that most parents will gleefully hand over to their kids...

I'm finding that this will likely save me a TON of money.

$16 a lb of good roasted coffee from my local roaster or $10 a LB for really expensive raw coffee. $20 for the popper (yes, I know real roaster are expensive... but this works.)

I'll be saving about $30 a month on coffee and it's better.

Gotta use the proper terms, yo.
