What you will find in cheap glass is a LOT of individual variation. My suggestion is to go to the biggest sporting goods store you can find and just look through every pair that is in your price range. 1 or 2 will jump out at you. While you pay for a lot of things with good glass, one of the things you pay quite a bit for is quality control, individual attention to each pair and so on.

Nikon. I just checked and the Steiners Amazon had for $80 at Christmas are now $260.

Nikon will be fine. I have a 12 x 50 set, no complaints. You might find Steiners for $200 if you're lucky.

Find a set of used Steiner 8x30 military/marine.
eBay always has sellers in the $125-150 range. Even better are the long discontinued 7x35mm military/marine. I picked up a set of the huge 15x80mm Senators for $600, NIB, a while back off eBay. |

They'll be used around water, so get ones with individual focus controls. At your pirce range, they're sealed better than those with the center mounted focus knob.

Anyone ever used Newcon Optiks? Over here in AFG i found some haji who has boxes of them and they seem legit. Super clear glass, clean quality control, comes with instructions in french and english, and has a signed quality control slip with a serial number. He is charging $30 bucks a pair, after I talked him down from $200 each. He claims they are used by the Canadian Army.

I keep a cheap pair of old Tasco binos in my truck. If they get stolen I'll be more pissed about the damage done to get them than their loss.
And come that day I'll start cruising pawn shops with $100-$150 in pocket and see what l find. |
