The original thread got archived.
I sent it to Albert @ Seattle Edge back in March and finally had the time to get it back together and do an update.
Received a Marble's knife yesterday--what to do with it?
Original condition of blade:
Before sending it to Albert, I polished the blade to remove all the tarnish, and removed the staghorn handle as it was on crooked. If you held the handle straight up and down the blade would point to 11:00, and that's just plain old not good. Albert doesn't do grip work, so that would be on me. I tossed it in the 6" bench vise and cranked a few times until the antler shattered.
When Albert sent it back it was sharp enough to shave with
I happened to have an old Solingen 102 with a seriously pitted 5" blade and decent leather grips/base, so I slid the grips off of it, sandwiched in some new leather, and made them long enough to fit the Marble's. I cut and sanded the leather down to a uniform profile, then dyed the leather black and gave it a quick cloth buff.
Finished! For now, anyways. I think it came out fairly decent for a first attempt, and thank you GD for recommending Seattle Edge for the sharpening!
