                         Smith & Wesson Co., the world's top handgun maker, will get a $1.8-million grant from the
                         Justice Department to develop a "smart gun" that would permit only the owner to fire the
                         weapon, Massachusetts lawmakers said.
                         Smith & Wesson said it will use the money to continue research into fingerprint-matching
                         technology and an electronic system to prevent people besides the gun owner from firing
                         the weapon.
                         The grant follows an agreement that Smith & Wesson struck with the Clinton
                         administration and Boston last year in which it agreed to change the way it makes and
                         sells weapons. Critics said the agreement bypassed the legislative process and infringed on
                         the rights of gun owners.

Good......I hope S&W takes the money! They should take long lunches, have pizza parties for all the employees, buy some new machinery, come back and tell the Justice Dept. "We tried but it ain't gonna work!" then get back to makin' guns for the citizenry of this nation!!

I must also comment on the boycott, if people are still boycotting Smith, they're blowin' it. Putting a gun manufacturer out of business doesn't appease any one but the Barbara Boxer's, Diane Fienstien's, Chuck Schumer's, and the like, including Handgun Control Inc. Smith shuts down and some serious sh*# hits the fan in the gun industry as S&W manufactures a lot of parts for other gun makers, i.e, Kimber (forges Slides, Frames, et al). I don't agree with the "agreement" at all, but when you consider the source, Clinton/Reno and thier ties with that Pompous Socialist Bastard Tony Blair, P.M. of England. What corner WASN'T S&W backed in to? No boycott here. Where was Colt when this went down, hell they totally bailed from the civilian market! Now who's the Weanie???
