[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Anyone else prefer the A1 (C7) upper?

I prefer the A1 style uppers. There are less moving parts to fiddle with and by no means do I intend to make 800m shots with iron sights. However I did upgrade my A1 upper with an A2 aperture. I was just wondering what everyone else's opinion was.

He just replaced the a2 sight with the same plane sight from AO.

I have the same setup on my CAR-15-C7 upper and A2 aperture.
For the carbine it's perfect. I like tha A2 on the rifle length guns, though.

I love that setup, I have the C7 upper with an Ashley Outdoor rear aperture to go with my 14.5" M4 barrel. It is rugged and lightweight, KISS.

I use the Bushmaster C7 uppers to build coyote rifles. You simply "set it and forget it!" This principle drove the development of the M-16A1 and the Army Basic Rifle Markmanship training. I can still remember my drill sergeant yelling "AIM CENTER MASS! AIM CENTER MASS!"

I have nothing against the A2 variety. They sure come in handy in service rifle competiton, but I prefer C7's for field use.

Say, do you think that they'll (manufacturers) ever bring back the light SP1 in a post-ban configuration?

I agree that is a great combination (I did the same thing)! I did swap the A2 stock for an A1 stock (kept the A2 buttplate).

What is the advantage of the AO same plane sight vs. the A2 aperature?? Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't the small hole on the A2 aperture 2 MOA above the 0-2 hole?

A1 definately. I love the triangular front stock. It makes the rifle look baaaaaaaad!

I also prefer the A1 upper, as it follows the KISS principle.

Bazzy, the advantage of the AO aperture is exactly what you mentioned. If you are using the A2 aperture when you switch between large and small holes your point of impact will shift. The AO sight is same plane, meaning whether you are on small hole or large hole there is no shift in point of impact. The Ashley sight also has slightly larger openings for even faster target acquisition at short ranges.

By the way Forest I got most of the inspiration for this AR from your posts and the Maryland AR15 website. Thanks for the great info. I also prefer the A1 stock, actually I like the early M-16 stock without the trapdoor even better, that's what I have on mine.

I have both all my A2s sights seem to be a little crookid? because of the spring tension on one side. I prefer A1s on the carbines and a2s on the rifles

I like light, fast and simple so all my AR's are carbines with pencil barrels and A1 uppers w/o f/a. Distance work is given over to the 91. Oh, and NO rapidex knob, too many people like to mess with it.

I agree. I prefer the A-1 sights and the pencil barrels. Especially on the carbines. A H-BAR carbine seems to defeat the purpose of the lightwieght rifle. I think the AR was in it's perfected state in the A1 configuration. Light and simple.

You can still find them, gunshows and ar15.com are good places to look. Bushmaster still has them ( with the brass deflector, like mine above) Grind the bayonet lug and put on a CAV COMP, you'll have a nice post ban.
