I own FA guns, but because they are so damn expensive these days, the bumpfire gets shot way more!

Guess the breakdown in cost is:

Material: $0.58
Labor: $10.00
Not going to jail: $36,989.42

I wonder how many thousands of them suppress-on sold for > $100. Over the years.

Is the material it's made from a matter of record on the transfer forms? Not that it'd be legal, but if a duplicate were to be made from steel, and the aluminum one destroyed, would anyone really know?

I figure the effect is similar...let's assume we're going top-of-the-line here with a Fostech DefendAR-15 for like $400...that leaves $36,600 for ammunition. At 30c/round of Wolf Gold, that gives us 122,200 rounds to shoot before we hit the cost of an RDIAS. Not counting parts wear and replacement, obviously

The choice is clear.

Piece of aluminum square stock, 3 milling operations (only 2 setups) and 1 drilling operation.   Wow.   That looks easy as hell to make.

The BATF is fairly well educated as to what types of materials DIAS manufacturers used pre-'86....and how they were machined, and how they were marked....

21st Century laser engraving on a steel DIAS body that should have been made from aluminum and engraved with an electro-pencil will get you busted......

Making the sear can be the tricky part with timing ECT. Also there are two hoes and one is threaded on the rdias body, one to hold onto the rear takedown lug on the upper.

This.  Still you would think a rig job like a DIAS would cost less than a from the factory FA.

Anyway $36k is wishful thinking anyway.  I know where there's a vintage Colt FA (not sure M-16 or AR-15) but it has collector value along with it's NFA value.  Don't remember what they were asking I think $20k something but it damn sure wasn't $36k.

Yup...
It's a perfect example of what happens when there's government manipulation of the free market.
What should be sold in a 3-pack for $9.95 on late night TV is instead priced at $37,000 due to government manipulation of the supply.

There is a lesson to be learned here but most people are far too stupid to understand it.

They are really easy to make... or so I was told by a guy who knows a guy

Seriously I would just get a echo trigger, When the day comes I need a machine gun I will have bigger things to worry about than if I have a piece of paper saying it's legal.

Makes the $450 of one of those or a Digitrigger or a Franklin look like a bargain by comparison.

That necklace picture is the Fleming guy  and those are Fleming HK Sears.  I think specifically that picture is the son that now runs the place. I know they have a bunch of transferable Sears that they have held onto all these years so those are all transferable.  If you look closely, those are serial numbers 1 through 15.  They sold one of their low serial number sears or at least had it up for sale maybe a couple years ago but it was a much higher serial number so who knows how many they really have

Very few done with the set screw; none of the ones I've owned or examined had a set screw, and I've owned and examined a number of them (RPB, JCB, Whitman, Broadhead, Wilson, and a couple others).  I think that was mostly something people did after they got them, not something any manufacturer did when they were making them.

The material isn't on record, but at least for the bigger names, BATFE pretty much knows what manufacturer's DIAS's were made of what materials.  JCB used steel and was pretty nicely finished compared to most, RPB was steel, but rougher finish, Broadhead was aluminum...

Had no idea they were up to those prices. I prefer the third hole approach myself but I guess there is some value in being able to move it around between guns. If I was going to drop a bunch of coin on one I'd go for the steel body for sure.  As much as my M16 lower is worth, I almost wish it was made of steel.
