2014 F350 6.7l diesel
47000 miles

I have it in to the dealer for some warranty work, and they're saying the front pads are down to 3.5mm and need to be replaced.  Quoted about $300.

Shouldn't they have lasted longer than 47k miles?  Am I getting ripped off?

It's not out of the realm of being legitimate. Depends on how you drive, what you tow, etc. I see trucks that go 30 and trucks that go 60

I put EBC pads and rotors on the front of my F-250 for $300...

47k seems like a high number to me, I wouldn't be upset unless you talking about the price THEY want to replace them.

That was to get both pads and rotors delivered to my door.  I installed.

$300 for just pads?  That seems extremely high, unless there's something weird about F350 brakes.

Price is about what I would expect from a dealer but no way in hell I would pay that.

Ford tech here.  yes 47K is a normal time for a truck to be needing brakes. like others said driving habits or if you tow/haul  will speed up the ware.  $300 for pads and a resurface of the rotors is about right for an F350 a normal truck or car is $199 . You are looking at $50ish for pads and 3 hours in labor for the install which would include the resurface of the rotors

$75 for hawke heavy duty pads for my 2500 dodge Cummins no way I could justify $300 for the 45minutes work they took me

I'd be happy with 47k miles on a one ton.

I'd not pay $300 for pads.

This.  I installed Akebono pads and premium rotors on my wife's Subaru from Rockauto.  I saved a ton vs. the dealer and these brakes stop better than OEM.

If you never use your brakes they will never wear out!  With that being said, that is a lot of truck to stop and depending on what you are doing with it as far as hauling or towing , mileage wise it is about time.

You can buy pads from about 30 bucks to 100 bucks for both wheels

Price seems excessive

3 hours for a front brake job??, is that how long it takes or just what they charge?I realize ford parts cost more but the man got name brand pads AND rotors delivered for $300!

Trucks I use to haul trailers regularly are lucky to get 20k out of brakes.  But we have actual hills and I am talking about pushing the limits of what a 1 ton truck can physically move and stop with

Thanks for the replies.  although I can wrench a bit, I just haven't messed with the brakes on any of my vehicles.

Turn rotors and replace pads at that price is not out of line for a dealer my shop would be slightly less.

industry standard. cars/ light trucks are 2.0hr  heavy duty like an f350 are 3.0hr duel rear wheels are 4.0 per axle.  my dealership uses a discounted labor rate for menu items like brake jobs normal labor rate is $95/hr  menu items are less but not sure what it is. the 3hours is what the tech gets paid to do the job.

Seeing that we are worlds apart in distance and state obviously, do you mind divulging the labor rate at your shop?
We are $98 and hour and one of the lowest hourly rates in my area, we are a independent shop, not a dealer.

Dealer rates around me are $125-135hr!

Two weeks ago I replaced both rotors and pads (semi-metalic ) for $124 in parts. F350. I believe I ordered from Amazon.

I'm in mass, and $125 is average around me.

$300 for a brake job on a 1 ton truck isn't bad around me. Obviously it can be done by yourself for much cheaper, but us mechanics gotta eat too.

Damn

I didn't put brakes on my 2500 Duramax until 200K.

I finally need em on my current Silverado (1/2 ton) at 120,000.

This is a little off your question, But I just put pads and rotors all the way around my 12 6.7 (54K miles) for a few pennies over $300 in parts and completed the entire job in about an hour. (I have a lift, helps things go quick!)

Save some cash and do em yourself!

We only get about 40k out of our f350 brakes. Currently on the 3rd set of pads with just over 90kon it.

As far a DIY maintenance goes, pads and rotors are usually some of the easiest jobs you can do.  If you can afford to have the dealership do it go ahead, but if you have the time and ability I really think you could do it on your own and save a ton.

Throw some pads on it if your rotors aren't warped.
