The U.S. Navy took the nuclear bomb part ("physics package" in weapons speak ....)  designed for the atomic round for this 11 inch cannon ....

... and designed a 16 inch nuclear round for the battleship cannons.  The W23 Projectile had a yield of 15 - 20 kilotons, making the Iowa class the undisputed champion for baddest battleship.  Only 50 were built.

I wonder if they detonated on impact or up in the air. Guessing they had to hit something. That would have been a game changer back when you usually had to have a direct hit.

When a battleship isn't enough FUCK YOU!, then it's time to say Fuck You! with a nuke!

I think this is an idea with legs. Will a modern version fit a 155 or MLRS?

It is amazing and scary how close we got to Nuclear Winter a number of times.
On October 24th, 1962, then-Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev told the president of Westinghouse that he didn’t want a nuclear war over Cuba. But if it happened, Guantanamo naval base there would “disappear the first day” after a U.S. invasion of the island.

"At the time, Khrushchev’s threat seemed like empty bluster," the National Security Archive notes.
What Kennedy did not know was that the Soviets had deployed nuclear cruise missiles to Cuba, armed with 14-kiloton warheads, roughly the power of the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima."

At about the time that Khrushchev was speaking with [the Westinghouse executive], a convoy of FKR cruise missiles was moving from Mayari Arriba to a pre-launch position at the village of Vilorio. (See map below.) On the night of October 26-27, at the height of the missile crisis, the convoy was ordered to the launch position the village of
Filipinas, 15 miles from Guantanamo naval base…

[This was on the same day] that the Joint Chiefs of Staff recommended an all-out U.S.
invasion of Cuba to destroy the Soviet missile bases. President Kennedy rejected the advice of his military advisers in favor of a diplomatic solution to the crisis that included a secret understanding between his brother and the Soviet ambassador.

There were 155mm nuclear rounds, yes.

The Soviets had them as well. The concern about a "suitcase nuke" is the feasibility of using the physics package from the 155-size artillery projectiles in a container to make a man-portable weapon.

Avoid the fight,

look what  years of letting the enemy know we are going to hit location A at 0030 has given us  ?

unending war

shit didnt we even  advance notice the folks we dropped the MOAB on ?

what did two  bombs do for us in Japan?

their "WTF were they thinking moments "
saved many lives by simply  avoiding the fight .

Battleship rounds are impressive.  Here's a magazine you can walk through on the USS Massachusetts.

They had an overhead rail system to transfer rounds between turrets incase any particular turret ran out.
