I have an Icom handheld that I really like.
It's an older one, but it does both Comm and Nav including localizer.

Yep, that's a nice unit - mine is the Icom IC-A20 (the early version of the A24).
You'll like it!

My father has the Icom A14 and likes it. Does not have NAV though.

A adapter for your headset is a must. The A14 is pretty damn loud and was very hard to hear in the plane (tried it over the weekend)

Hard to beat Icom. Durable, the menus are easy to navigate, and they can usually have their memory banks set using software and a computer.

Nope, thankfully. I'm dual nav/coms anyway. The kicker was, it was a freshly refurbished radio on its first flight. Pulled it and sent it back that day. The company I used is bending over backward to make it right. Free shipping both ways and repair.

Also luckily, it gave me a warning (blipping when transmitting) and I moved all my freqs over to the other com. 10min later it took a dump (my local avionics guy thinks it was a faulty power supply. First time in 20plus years he has had a bad radio come back from that company. I got the short end of the luck stick)
