When was the last time US ground forces were attacked by an enemy air asset?
Topic came up last night, I was stumped. Do we have to go all the way back to WWII for this, or was there something much more recent? |

I don't think there was ever a time where an enemy aircraft attached itself to one of ours.

Good question. Looks like the answer is April 15th, 1953. I figured it was during Korea.

Does this count?
In one of their few offensive air attacks by the VPAF during the entire conflict, on 12 January 1968 a four aircraft formation of Antonov An-2 biplanes was reported flying towards a secret USAF TACAN and radar site in Laos guiding American bombers over Northern Vietnam. Two aircraft flew on to the strike, while the other two split off.[5] As the two continuing An-2s flew over, their crews dropped 120 mm
mortar shells as bombs through the aircraft's floor and also strafed their targets with 57 mm rockets from the wing pods.[6] View Quote |

What do you mean attacked?
Attempted to? Actually did? Or actually killed? |

This. "Conventional" forces would probably be back in Korea... View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I don't think the US willingly attaches our units to enemy units. I think its a policy thing.

By enemy aircraft, it was during the Korean war.
The USAF is so dominant with aircraft/air power that most countries don't even try, a fact that the detractors here will begrudgingly admit. Is everything that the USAF does great? Hah- NO. |

If you count Navy, May 17 1987 when an Iraqi fighter attacked the USS Stark, killing 37 sailors.
