Headed out West with my 7mm Rem Mag. Looking for a recommendation for a good scope that will get me out 400 yards. Thanks.

I swear, this place needs a tech forum for optics.
Maybe we can recommend one? |

Not to be a jackass, but if you're asking this question, please don't take a 400 yard shot on an animal.
That said, pretty much anything 4-12x and higher mag will get you there with ease. Do yourself a favor and skip out on the BDC reticles; learn how to work the turrets. |
|
Look at the Nikon lineup. Excellent hunting scopes and great prices. Burris is also great glass.
Check out the Optics Planet for a baseline and then shop around. Amazon carries a lot of stuff, just type in the part number you want. |
|
For 400 yards and under, I'd look in the 2-7 or 2-10 power range.
Eta. Your 7mm will reach out quite a bit farther so I'd personally look at a 4-16 in case you want to stretch it out more in the future. |
|
Check the "OAL" spec in the description of any optics you are considering. You are looking for anything 14,400" or longer.

I run an inexpensive $200 4-12x Nikon on my 7mag. Ive got good hits out to 700m. I live out west.

I've never found the maximum viewing range limit on my scopes.
I think they are broken. Cheap Philippine made shit. |

What no Nightforce ATACR 7-35 recommendations? or this S&B
http://www.opticsplanet.com/schmidt-bender-5-25x56-34mm-tube-pm-ii-psr-riflescope-limited-edition.html Tangent Theta should also be on your short list. |

If you want an inexpensive external turret scope, look at the Bushnell Elites. I have a couple, they are fixed 10 power with mil turrets (3 clicks to the inch at 100 instead of 4).
Here. |
|
A quick look at JBM shows that a 7 mag will be point blank on a 10'' target to 378 yards. I used a 150gr Gameking @ 3100 fps, 5,000 ' altitude for a quick calculation.
You shouldn't need anything too fancy to achieve your goal. A Leupold VX 3 should do what you want. |

If you don't want to spend a ton of money, I would look at these, first focal plane, mil reticle mil turrets, $229

400 yards is doable with a 6 power scope and an MOA/milrad reticle. If you have bad eyesight, might want to bump it up to 10X.
I can hit 12" plates out to 600 with my .308 at 10x. I rarely dial the magnification past 10x unless it's super windy and I'm trying to watch for misses. |

Good gawd. Reach out to 400 yards? US Army snipers of WW II were using 2.2 X Weaver 330 scopes. A few luckier ones may have had a Lyman Alaskan 2.5 X. The No. 32 used by the Brits was only 4 X. The Russians had 4 X and 3.5 X. Perhaps vying for worse of the lot was the German ZF-41 at 1.5 X.

Leupold VX3- 3.5x10. All you'll ever need and some for around 400$
Use one on my browning a bolt 3006. Took a moose at 325 yards and multiple deer and various ranges. |
|
You can hit a man sized target with ease on a 4X ACOG at 500 yards. 400 yards isn't as daunting as you think it is.

What are you aiming at at 400 and a budget would be helpful.
Making hits at 500 is easy with my 1-4 vortex pst on a 24" plate. A clay pigeon on the other hand I want my bushnell elite 3.5-21. Still hard but at least I can see it. |
|
Burris 4.5-14 maybe not the rest glass in the world but internals hold zero better than most..

Half the responses here are from guys who have never shot past 100 yards at a range I'd bet. I'm no expert myself but can at least share some hunting experience.
I don't have young eyes anymore and appreciate good glass. You can never go wrong with a Leopold scope. I use a 3x9-40 shooting out to 300 yards comfortably for Wisconsin Whitetails. Would go 4x12-50 for shooting 400+ yards out West. Key is gathering light from good glass as you may be shooting in dim light conditions. I've shot most my deer at sunrise or sunset under cloudy conditions. Basically little shooting light. |

As others have said it really depends on what you are trying to do, and your budget. 24" gong, 10" gong or 3" or smaller? Only willing to spend 500 or less or are you fine and ok spending 3000 plus. There is a whole lot factors that come into play. I'd at least check out some of the options for Vortex optics they have stuff for a range of applications and a kick ass warranty. And an industry partner here.

Well, I'm making hits at 512 yds on a 12" steel plate with a Trijicon 1-4. So that should work

|
Wrong forum OP. Everyone here is an ex-sniper who only shot in daylight and no wind at a 12" steel gong.
