Damn old people suck.

I was just measuring it out and elementary school was just under half a mile away, jr high school was 1.1 miles away. We either walked or rode our bikes. This was in southern California in the 80's.

When we moved to Texas, i rode the bus to jr high and high school.

Southern Cali here, SFV. Started walking with Anna-Rosa in the 1st grade back in the late 60s and like you, it was about 1.1 miles and then I started on my bike in like the 3rd grade.

I even road my bike to high school 3 miles away. I once rode my bike to middle school about 6 miles away, although I was on a bus for most of that time.

I walked a half mile to middle school. This was in the 80s. And yes, even when it snowed. It was awesome. The way home took like 2 hours, lol.

12 miles...uphill, both ways...in the snow...the Florida blizzard...lasted over a decade...those of us who lived through it will never forget...the snow was over our heads...

ETA- Sharks too...you can't see a great white in the snow.

Elementary, bus and don’t know how far. Middle school was directly across the street and high school was just under 2 miles.

It was about half a mile if I cut though the orange grove and cow pasture. It was about 2 miles if I went around.

Elementary - 2 blocks
Jr High - 0.7 miles. Everyday for 3 years.
High School - 1.5 miles. Luckily only had to walk about half a year. Friend's dad was laid off from Ford and he took us. By Junior year, we started getting our licenses so there was always someone to ride to school with.

ETA it was up hill both ways. There was a hill between my house and the school, so I walked uphill both ways, however, there was more downhill on the way home.

0.7 miles is a long way when you have parents that make you bring home every book, every night--homework or not. I felt like the mailman delivering the Sears Wishbook everyday. Throw in some snow and it sucks.

I would walk to school in good weather. It was a little over 1 1/2 miles from home. I could always walk it faster than riding the bus because of all the stops along the way.

Maybe about an eighth of a mile to elementary school. About a half mile to junior high, if my friend's mom wasn't driving us that day. I rode the bus or rode with friends to high school.

Voted 1 mile. It was almost exactly a mile.

But in all fairness that was to the bus stop, not to school. School was an additional 15 miles via bus.

Grew up in the foothills of the Sierra in CA.

Grade school... 10 feet from car to door.
High school... lets see... say 10 feet to my car... then say 50 to the school... from the parking lot.
College... I guess between 1/4 and 1/2 mile depending on class location and whether I was in the dorm or living off campus and parking availability.

I walked home from middle school a few times. Walked there when I missed the bus once. It was a mile or so. Other than that one, all my schools were too far to walk. I rode the bus. My high school was a 15-20 minute drive by car.

Southern California, 1.5 miles to elementary school, 2.1 miles to junior and high school according to Google maps.

My kids grew up in south Florida and buses were based on the number of major intersections that had to be crossed, not necessarily the distance. They usually had a bus or we drove than, but in elementary school at one house it was just a block walk.

9th grade was 1.9 miles away. At 2 miles, you got to ride a bus. Asshole friends that lived a block further down use to laugh from the bus as my friend and i were hoofing it.

5th-6th grade - 2/3 mile
7th-8th grade - 50ft shy of 2 miles (outside 2 miles riding bus was free inside 2 miles $200/yr)
9th-12th grade - 1.1 miles

Walked ~ 2 miles, or sometimes rode my bike.
From 13 on, going to high school, drove my car, ~ 3 miles,
but had to park 1/2 mi from school, 'cause I didn't have a license,
so couldn't use the school parking lot.

Then I got busted at 14-1/2, and had ride my bike again, boy did that suck.
Hard to get a blow job from a babe on a bike.!!!!

College was about 8 miles, sometimes drove, but parking was a bitch,
was easier to take the train, and then cable car up the hill.

Fun times, tho.

I was a rowdy and unruly punk even at that young age.

A police officer once pulled me over, while riding my bicycle, for busting the 15mph speed limit in a toney neighborhood that was on the way to school.

I told him, "What are you going to do about it, cupcake, take away my bicycle license?".

Probably a felony offense today.

During grade school in the 1960's walking or riding your bicycle to school was pretty much a common place thing.
I don't know precisely the exact distance but being I am actually off tomorrow I will actually check the distance I walked fairly regularly between circa 10th grade thru 12th grade(1969-1972) to the high school that I went to and will update this post then.
But it will probably be close to two miles.
We will certainly see then.

Mileage change from middle to high, but 1.9 because the busses wouldn't pick up anyone under two. I could see the next stop from the one we got picked up on for elementary. Middle school the walk was flat, but high school was indeed uphill both ways because of the hilly road that made the shortest route.

Walking in the snow in shoes because I was too cool for boots. Carrying all the crap home from practice sucked after running sprints in early practices.

The only year I walked was 8th grade when they opened a new school in my neighborhood. I remember i was right at the distance limit of walking vs getting a bus. I just mapped it and It was 1.1 miles. I rode my bike whenever I could though.
