This is still my favorite movie about Jesus.  The entire cast has fantastic pipes!  (Although the sound is horribly mixed)

I remember watching it in music class. It's probably one of the best of the musical movie genre.

The 1970 Concept album is the best of all the various cuts.

I posted the album, which was done independently of anything else.  It's not a soundtrack.  Ian Gillan sings Jesus.  The movie is good, too.

ETA:  The album was first, before the movie or plays.  It was the original concept.

AAAAAHHH!!  Wrong version. Stand by...

World getting weird, I'd have thought fewer people than us would know the music.  Centurions with Chrome helmets......

Sir Lloyd Webber's latest re-arrangement of Puccini's greatest hits.

Ironic you post this on Easter since the resurrection was left out of the play/album/movie.

Good tunes though.

The album did come first and is good music but I've always prefered the movie version.

I like that movie, but I haven't seen it in a long time.
I also like;
The Ten Commandments - Charleton Heston
King of Kings - Jeffrey Hunter
The Gospel of Matthew - Bruce Marchiano
Ben Hur - Charleton Heston

Yeah I love the brown covered version too. A lot of the musicians are crazy good, it's a bunch of Joe Cocker's Grease band and a lot of British studio musicians.

My oldest son (20y) was in utero when we saw JCS live.  The 'Caiaphas' character had an even better voice than the movie.  Son was rocking in the womb when he sang.

Sucked that Ted Neely was out that night, but the show was great.

Many considered it sacrilegious at the time.

You are correct! I remember that debate very well. It's funny in retrospect because Sir Tim Rice was very wise about understanding the situation. One of the main questions is why the people of Jersusalem would be so welcoming and praising of Jesus on Palm Sunday and ready to kill him on Friday.

The lyrics are great about showing that the people of Jerusalem expected Jesus to be a Messiah in the mold of Judas Maccabaeus, who led the people against the Babylonians and do the same against the Romans. When they found out that "His kingdom was not of this world," they tossed him aside, and the Chief Priests and other religious leaders used that disappointment to take out another religious leader whom they saw as a rival.

It's an apostate version of the actual story.

It's still really good music, other than that.

I own a copy on vinyl that is in nearly new condition. Recorded it onto reel-to-reel and cassette on the initial playing and then listened to those over the years.

That's funny to me, since I watched it for the first time in CCD (Catholic Sunday school, basically).

This. The album was far superior to the recording and the arrangement of the movie.

Nazareth, your greatest son;
Should've stayed a great unknown.
Like his father, carving wood;
He'd of made good!

Tables, chairs, and oaken desks;
Would've suited Jesus best.
He'd of caused no body harm;
No one alarm!
