I need to replace our 2003 Escalade ESV with something newer.

It needs to seat 6 and have enough room for 8 suitcases/duffel bags
Be comfortable on 500 mile trips
decent fuel economy
Have DVD players for the kids
Have 100k miles of relatively trouble free life left in it
Priced under $30k because I don't finance

I'm familiar with the older GM line and am not thrilled with the 5.3 oil issues

What 5.3 oil issues? My 2014 Silverado doesn't burn any oil.

I would look at a suburban/yukon xl.

I don't know much about SUVs. How do you feel about a minivan? How old are the kids? Roof rack for added capacity but you could probably put most / all the luggage inside. Or get a trailer hitch + carrier.

Most vans fit all your criteria. You can also fold the seats down and use it to haul all kinds of stuff (full sheets of plywood, lawn mower, etc). Friend of mine has over 300k on a early 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan. Biggest issue was the A/C compressor going out.

I must have lucky friends/family  too. I have 3 aquaintances with 5.3 powered silverados/sierras (2014 and newer), and none have said anything about oil issues.
Is it a less expensive fix than replacing turbos/shortblocks on ecoboost f150s? I do have a friend who had both turbos replaces, and eventually the 3.5 eb grenaded. Not tuned.

Honestly this, or a Honda odyssey. I was super anti van but after we got one for family road trips they are the tits. Plenty of room good on gas and comfortable as hell. I can also fold the seats down and fit in full sheets of plywood or drywall You can seriously haul a ton of stuff with the seats down or out.

This might be the way to go if you do not need to tow anything. Odysseys and Siennas are know to run past 250k miles without much issue.

I think he could get that new and nicely equipped for about 35K. Maybe try and round up few more dollars if financing's completely out.

No minivans.

I oftentimes pull a car hauler and drag home toys.

I found a newer Escalade but 13/19 mpg is ugly. 403 hp is nice though

I never thought about them, till I rode in one.
Plush leathet seats, AC everywhere  and quick, I was quite surprised, they are actually bad ass.

Ah, shit. Pulling a car trailer'll pretty much mean a full size double cab pickup (double cab to get the seating arrangement you want) or a full size SUV I'd say.

Walk around your property and see if there's a parked SUV of unknown provenance.

You could start a thread about it. Maybe even finish it this time.

Expedition, they have more room than a Tahoe or Suburban (XL model) should be some good deals out there. Plus the Ford motors are bulletproof . If you get an Ecoboost older than 16 install a catch can and take care of it, change plugs every 36k and have them look at the timing chain about 80-90k.  If you are worried about it just get a 302.

Yep GMs 5.3s have severe oil issues, 1 qt per 1k miles is common and the newer v8s with cyl deactivation are shit just waiting to break

I've got a sillyverado with a 4.8, same engine as 5.3 and it uses a bit of oil. I wouldn't call it severe about a quart between changes. Take the throttle body off the intake and peek in there and you'll see where your oil's going. That PVC system seems to suck it out of the crankcase.

Get a Yukon or Yukon XL, Denali trim level or the Escalades.  They have the 6.2L motor, no AFM.  Fuckers will last forever.

You should be able to find one in your price range with 75k miles or so.

I bought an '09 Sierra 1500 Denali a few years ago with 70k on the clock.  Was $25k.  Great truck.

ETA: I think the K2XX trucks have AFM in the 6.2, so look at 2013 and older.

Look into the Ram/Mercedes Sprinters. 5 cylinder diesel.

This is an option but it has lots of little things going.  It needs the sensor that wraps the steering column so the whole shaft must be pulled to replace it, all the paint is worn off the radio buttons that work about 80%, and the trans is starting to slip on the 2-3 shift every now and then. Plus, the PO snagged the DVD system out of it.

We need the big vehicle to go to church and on long road trips. Around town trips and we drive the smaller vehicles.

I was gonna say the same thing, but for different reasons.

I don't think you're going to find a new vehicle as good as the one you have at any price. You'd come out ahead by putting $5-10k into the one you have and restoring it to excellent condition.

Pull the transmission and take it in for a rebuild; 4L60E should run about $1,000 if a rebuild is needed. This would be a great time to pull the steering shaft and replace the sensor… The radio would be costly and I would go aftermarket.

I have an LX470 I paid $8,800 for with less than 200K on the odometer.

It will seat six, but still not quite enough room for what OP needs. However, I LOVE it as a backup for the '13 Sienna.

OP needs a Sienna.

ETA: Similar situation here with a family of six. Myself, wife unit, nine year old girl, seven year old girl, three year old boy, and seven month old girl.

I will reiterate. OP needs a Sienna.
