California secession organizers say they've opened an embassy -- in Moscow

California gained an embassy in Russia last weekend, at least in the eyes of those who have promised to seek a statewide vote on secession,
nicknamed "Calexit," in 2018. Louis Marinelli, a San Diego resident who is the leader of the group promoting an effort to turn the state into an independent country , organized the Moscow event that was publicized on social media. "We want to start laying the groundwork for a dialogue about an
independent California joining the United Nations now," he said in an
email Monday. Marinelli is currently working as an English teacher in Russia, and
said he is there working on immigration issues related to his wife, who
is a Russian national.

Well if they leave the union they will need military protection I imagine it will be much cheaper for them to just host Russian bases than pay the US for their safe keeping so this move makes sense.

Why don't they just personally secede (i.e. emigrate) to the country of their choice. There are lots of countries out there willing accept Americans (and American money), even more so if you are willing to take a job like teaching English.

Cause here's the rub. Most countries have actual immigration laws that state you have to have both an ability to contribute to their country (a marketable skill) AND enough money to hold you over in savings for a set time period (6-12mo usually).

The vast majority of people in California (and the U.S. for that matter) are living on credit and don't actually have the second part covered.

Once they are a separate country, I wonder how long it will take for some enterprising individuals to do the math on the wealth they have vs the military they do not have. The cartels will almost certainly try to take over immediately. It will get bloody real quick, possibly even French Revolution style if the super rich stay there.

Long term outlook for the embassy may not ne good. Los Angeles Times today "California’s low birth rates are helping prolong a decade-long trend of minimal population growth. The 0.75 percent increase between July of 2015 and 2016 marks 12 consecutive years that the state has gone without a bump above 1 percent. That’s a far cry from last century’s growth, which at times soared to 3 percent or more annually.

“In the ’70s and ’80s, we were pretty much a new state, with plenty of opportunity and open land, and many people came here,” said Walter Schwarm, a demographer with the Department of Finance. “Now, we look like a state that isn’t at that point anymore. We’re a mature state.”

As with the birth rate, the number of people moving to California has done little to boost the state’s population. While the level of newcomers has gone up since the late 2000s, when the recession discouraged many from coming here, migration to California remains low by historical standards."
