I'm wondering how many people opt out of the full body scanner at the airport, and if so, why. I always opt out because I never agreed with having them in the first place. I think they're just another government intrusion into our lives.

I DGAF about it.  I actually kinda feel sorry for the TSA folks, considering the size of most folks in the airport.

I always opt out for two reasons.

First, I'm skeptical of new, rapidly deployed technology that I'm assured is perfectly safe.  After all,  early X-rays, thalidomide, lead paint, agent orange were all wonderful creations in their time.   Maybe this puts me in the same nut-job boat as the anti-vaccine crowd but I'll let other folks get exposed for a decade or so before I join in.

Secondly, I don't like the idea of being forced into a box that several thousand other people are pushed through daily.  Flu anyone?

I have never seen a backscatter machine.  But the millimeter wave machines I would opt out of if I was early.  If I was running late I would go through it ocasionaly.  With precheck.  I'very only gone through metal detectors the last couple years.

No.  In fact, an hour before I check in I pop a Viagra and then listen to Penthouse Forum letters using a headset while I wait in the screening line.

When the agent gets the report over his radio after I am scanned, I say "Hey, it's cold in here.  Don't judge."

I did not know it was an option to opt out.  So, no I have always done the body scan.

I did opt out of taking my shoes off once.  Only once.  The way the take of your shoes sign was written it appeared to be optional.  So, I asked a TSA.  He said it was optional.  After I walked through the metal detector they pulled me aside and did the full cavity search.    After the search was over I asked why they did it and TSA said because I did not take my shoes off.  I asked why he did not mention that when I asked him about taking of my shoes and he said because I did not ask.

I take my shoes off now.

I always just go through the body scanner. I am not exactly "white" and as such always get an extra pat down. One TSA officer once said I had something over my chest, and started to ask me about it. I told him I had no such thing and he scanned my chest with a wand before letting me pass.

It's very unusual. However most of the time it's painfree. One time I saw the TSA officers unloaded these old couple's entire carry on luggage. They dumped out the entire content, patted them down, then gave them the all clear. Very unsure exactly what that was supposed to do.

always opt out,  mostly to be a PITA and to establish that we can, in fact, opt out.  I have been punished several times by being held in small holding areas for 20 minutes,  lectures from the fuckballs at the TSA, having my luggage dismantled and strewn everywhere.

F the TSA.  Useless assholes. I hate them.  The do nothing but burn dollars and put on a show.

I still don't trust their backscatter machines aren't storing high res images, and it's interesting how every time we go to the airport they never hassle me about opting out, but if wife tries to opt out, they almost always try and cajole her into the scanner.

I wouldn't exactly say they violate the 4th amendment right since entering the airport is basically giving consent to search. They posted signs all over the airport to describe this.

Now if they put random stop-and-frisk or random police checkpoints around the cities without any sort of warnings, then that would be a problem. Most DUI checkpoints post signs prior to the checkpoint explaining that proceeding will essentially give the police the right to search your vehicle.

I always opt out.  Was asked why last time and said "Because I can and I get enough radiation at work and the ARA says only one chest xray per year and this is the same asize a chest xray"  tsa guy says "you were scanned three times coming in and..."  apparently it wasn't public knowledge.  Several smaller airports are testing back scatter.

If you walk through dubai airport, you will be scanned a minimum of 4 times and you can't even tell they are there

I always opted out. I would request that they go a little to the left or right on occasion too. They never held me up and several times I made it through faster than my wife who was in the normal line. They would pull people who were opting out and let us go through ahead of everyone else.

This was how I felt the time I had to go through it at O'Hare, and it was not bad really, but immediately upon completion of it I was then pulled out of line and patted down as well. I was like "really"

Same here. It's no longer convenient. It's no longer enjoyable, not just because of the ridiculous security, but because of the other passengers you're forced to be exposed to.

Personally, I'd rather drive. I'm more comfortable, I get to enjoy the scenery, and I don't have to put up with the TSA or smelly, loud, obnoxious travellers.

these are the scanners that the designer came out and said that these really weren't originally designed for humans. something about DNA rearrangements.

I always get the full treatment, so I just opt out and get ordered around by people looking for nitrile gloves.

Always opt out here in the US.

I do have a question, though.  I was at Heathrow (London) anbd went through security where they had these.  Can you opt out in other countries?  I ended up getting waived through a regular x-ray machine, so I didn't have to ask.

For those of you opting out due to radiation concerns - the energy involved is non-ionizing i.e. won't give you cancer.
