How does a company like Sig Sauer stop other manufacturers from making caliber conversions for Sig products like the MCX?  It would seem pretty straight forward, for example, to take the 5.56 MCX and build a 6.5 setup for it.  The MCX (and MPX) appear to be a slightly modified (shortened) AR-18 design.  Is that minor tweak in length enough for Sig to actually patent a design that was originally applied for in 1966?
