Typical Christmas party, where siblings and their respective families gather at Mom and Dad's house. Let's say one nephew in the bunch came down with the flu a few days before the party. Would the entire event be postponed, or would they simply leave the sick kid (17 years old) at home and everyone else would meet as planned?

This scenario is happening with a friend of mine and her family right now, so I told her I would start a thread on it and see what everyone says here. I think the answer is obvious, but figured I would run it by you guys.

It happened to me when I was 11 or 12. Mother left me home alone and took my younger brother to Grandmas where the rest of the family was gathering

If a kid gets sick, it's not stopping the whole party.

The only person with power to stop the party is the mom at the house it's being held. If mom gets sick then we're all screwed anyway.

or, for my wife's family, since my niece has been fighting leukemia for the past year and is about to come home, it would be the sick one and their immediate family.

yep, only the matriarch being sick should stop the show. One kid being sick gets left at home unless it's a baby. if that happens a parent stays home with the baby.

Hell, to me that would have been awesome. I remember I got sick on Christmas Eve and had to miss visiting my relatives. Very memorable even though I was puking. It was just...calm being home alone.

My family is screwed up enough that not only would it not stop them but they would bring the sick person with them. Really pisses me off.

Especially if it happened in my wife's family.

The kid would come anyway. He/she would cough and hack all over everyone. Then they'd lay on the couch sniffling and running a 104* fever and contaminate EVERYONE IN THE HOUSE and we'd all be sick just in time for New Years.

No and I wouldn't want that person there. Take them a plate and some presents, maybe even some redbox DVDs. I wouldn't ask anyone to cancel just because I was sick. That would be pretty selfish.

When I was a kid it was at my grandparents house. Them, me and my parents, 6 sets of aunts and uncles, and their approximate 20 children, plus any of my grandparents siblings and their families that stopped by.

There were always a couple people missing here and there.

My brother sat through Christmas dinner one year with a mouth packed full of gauze to stop him from bleeding on the tablecloth. He'd had his wisdom teeth taken out on 23 Dec so he wouldn't miss any school.

Suffice to say, nothing delays Christmas at our house.

No. We went ahead and had it. And my sister brought her baby with a stomach flu. The kid passed it to my Dad and from there it spread to everyone. Mom insisted on family photos in the park, so Dad would smile for the camera and then run over and puke behind a tree. On the drive home, my step-son sat in the back puking in plastic grocery bags on the 12 hour drive home. Worst. Christmas. Ever.

That's pretty much where my family is with that.

If the kid is sick but it's nothing contagious, I might bring him with but take two cars so that he can leave early. Some bug that can spread, and I'll want to load a plate up for him and set up a time for him to Skype the rest of us at the party. Didn't we just have a thread about that?

Leave the sick kid home if old enough or one parents stays with.

Had a stupid aunt bring her sick daughter to a Christmas part a few years back and spread the flu to 90% people there. It literally knocked out our entire family minus my mother-in-law who was caring for 8 sick people in 2 different houses. They moved people to our house because theres didn't have enough toilets for ppl to throw up in.

Keep your germs to yourself. We all miss a major holiday or even from time to time because were sick, it happens.
