How hard would it be for a talented welder and machinist to reweld a cut reciever, using the correct jig, so that the gun functions properly and safely? Is this something only someone with experience building firearms should attempt?

ETA: this would be a semi-auto build firing from a closed bolt

We've had a couple threads about that, incl pics. It's not hard if you know what you're doing and the results looked great.

Try that weaponeer DIY site if you want to avoid the cunts accusing you of being a BATFE agent or screaming at you for trying to get them in trouble.

IIRC if its cut to spec its no longer a firearm so you would technically be manufacturing a new firearm if you fill the autosear hole, if you don't you're re-manufacturing a mg and will get loved tenderly. (im just some guy on the internet btw, and extremely ignorant in the topic of rewats, don't take any of that as gospel)

How hard? Demil specifications require 1/4" kerf cuts in most instances, meaning you've not only got to get everything lined up correctly, and remove any features which would make it a machinegun receiver when finished, but you've got to trim the stubs and weld in machined repair sections, then do final finish machining to dress the welded areas.

It's been done, many times, but it's not trivial. Also in the case of a load-bearing receiver, like the M14, the welded areas aren't as strong as the forged original was. Less of a problem when rewelding a non load-bearing receiver like an M16.

For whatever you have, there should be ATF-approved methods for semi-only builds. There's tons out there.

Depends on what you're rewelding. That being said a lot of stuff already has flats, 80%, or 100% semi auto receivers available so its worth a look

Lots of ATF approvals for rewelded MGs, AK receivers, Bren guns, and more.
MG features must be removed or Semi auto features added to the pieces before rewelding.
Need to make sure you start with properly demilled pieces to being with.

Demil standards have changed over time.
The early bren imports weren't cut through the barrel locking area, making them much easier to reweld. Somebody changed that, so later imports were cut right where the barrel locks.
Back in the day they let MP44's cut in half in, and ~10 years ago they'd cut the MP5/40's in half to keep the whole front half intact.
I'd be paranoid today about buying something simply cut in half. Doesn't pass the "demilled" muster anymore

That looks to be one of the better demills from IMA.
It can be done without a jig.
Your problem is you have to do it yourself. It cannot be hired out unless the have a manufacturer FFL

If the kit in question is a Bren, there is an ATF approval for a semi auto reweld.
There was a company that sold the kit for it, forgot who, came with instructions and a jig.
It's complicated though, not your beginner level kind of thing.

The initial cleanup and cleanup between passes is the hard part.

I did mine a little differently with the blocking bar because I couldn't bear to destroy those cool markings.

Almost anything is possible when it comes to metal work. You can always add and remove metal. The problem is having the skills and equipment. A $200 harbor freight wire feed or stick welder ain't gonna do the job.

With the right filler rod and appropriate skill level anything is possible.

Bren receiver Jigs are out there as well as places that will reweld certain demil type Bren receivers for fee.

Yes, you can, yes it is very legal, and there are several methods to make a semi BREN out of destroyed receiver fragments....Each method has pros and cons, some easier, some harder.

Do your homework before you ever pick up a tool.

I have build a bunch of MG from kits, and like 5 brens.

At the very least you need to be able to weld, have a grinder, die grinder, and dremel.

I used to do it with M64 Yugo AK kits. Its not easy but its not hard. Im a fabricator for a living so that helped a lot. But with no welding/fitting experience its a pretty tall task. Not impossible but its a gun and Id be skeptical
of shooting one built by a complete novice

Heres an old pic of an M64 I did a long time ago. And yes the 3rd pin (autosear) hole was welded up before I welded the 3 receiver stubs together.
