I haven't owned either since I was a teenager, once I got into cars and jeeps they all got sold off.

I bought my daughters a kid sized quad though, and I need something to putt around on with them.

Being a cheapskate, my research indicates I can pick up a Blaster or a 125 bike for dirt cheap around here, even cheaper if it needs a top end put in it (not a stranger to that at all). I don't want a 4 stroke, I had a dual sport that was a 4 stroke, and it was boring to ride and a pain in the ass to rebuild.

The pros to the small quad:
I can be lazy.
Wheelies won't kill me thanks to the grab bar.
I can fit one of the kids on it with me.
They are fun and easy to mod (especially now that I'm a grown up, a pipe and silencer doesn't seem like 5 months worth of saving anymore)
I can get by without a full set of riding gear.

Cons:
Takes up more space to store it
Quads are a little boring after awhile
Rougher on the body bouncing through the woods
I'll have to get the trailer hooked up to transport both of them.

Small 2-stroke bike pros:
Who doesn't like getting snappy with the throttle on a 125...it's just fun.
I can store it in a broom closet if I have to.
Also easy to fix.
Can fit in the truck with the kids quad.
Will keep up fine if I decide to trail ride with some friends on bigger machines (the bike will, I might not be able to anymore)

Cons:
I have to buy more riding gear
The first few rides I'll probably be sore as hell.
A miscalculated wheelie and I'm laying on my back questioning why I make the choices I do.
No passengers.
No factory lights.

I'm hung up on the 2 stroke, mostly because it's what I had as a kid, and because of how much easier they are to rebuild (not that I plan on blowing them up every other week). And they smell good.

Now, argue your points.

I'm too "old" for a bike (I'm only 36), but it is so nice to rest on a quad when you are putting around. You can just stop and sit! It's the best! I grew up on bikes, moved to quads, and now I'm in the market for a YXZ1000R SXS.

Get a bike and lay off the wheelies.  Cost of gear mostly offset, if not completely, by saving the cost of buying and registering a trailer.  You'll be a lot more likely to go out without having to hook up the trailer too.

Valid point.

I remember a couple roll overs as a teenager, my ability to have a quad land on me and then keep riding for the day has probably diminished substantially since then.

I already own a trailer, so that's not a huge deal.

It's looking like bike though so far, I think it will be less abuse on me.

I'm gonna keep scanning craigslist, I want to find one with a blown motor for practically nothing, even if I have to do a complete tear down.

I would take one, but I really don't feel like spending 12 grand on one when I can bike up a bike for a fraction of that.

Don't ride a quad with your kid on it. Especially since you're a newb and mention wheelies. That's how someone gets killed.

As a family dude you will survive better on 4.

Otherwise I recommend wing-suiting.

Dirt bikes are safer than quads.

ETA if you want lights look for a 2 stroke enduro or enduro kit.

Come on, I wouldn't ride like an idiot with a kid on. Not a newb to them, just been away for awhile. The last time I rode on a track I was 14 or 15 I think. It's only been trail riding on dad's 4x4 since then.

I only do stupid things when there is no one in the vicinity to go down with me.

That said, I just plowed a track out in my front yard for Christmas, and took the throttle blocker off the kids quad, that thing rips when it's not in boring mode. Maybe we can just take turns riding hers.

Moto x ed quads most my life till about 4 yrs ago.  250r and 450r.

Not much forgiveness on a quad you gotta know how to roll and bail.

New 4 stroke race engines are much better than 2 stroke.  You can't compare a modern 150,250 or 450 race 4 stroke to a similar trail bike models

Find someone with a size bike you are interested in and see if they will let you try it out. Last off road bike I had was a 250 Yamaha with the monoshock and the year before it got water cooled. It was fast for the day.
A few months ago I picked up a 2011 KTM 250 2 stroke. It is ungodly fast and quick and the suspension is unreal. It`s night and day compared to what it used to be. Try one before you buy if possible.

Real men ride 2 wheels.  If you are a full grown man consider a 250, 125's are weak sauce.

ETA: You might try a modern 4 stroke with a performance motor.  If you had an XR, KLX, DRZ etc, a modern 450 will rock your world by comparison.  They also aren't as hard to rebuild as people make them out to be.

I couldn't handle a 250 at 130 lbs, I don't really want to jump right back into trying at 170 lbs.

Maybe later if the kids show some interest we can do some upgrading.

I had a 4 stroke dual sport in college, rebuilding it and adjusting valves sucked, not having to mix gas is nice though.

Nothing more fun that flopping over during low speed non-technical maneuvers.

A friend of mine had one of those old Honda 200 3-wheelers, we tipped it over a lot.

Yeah right, I told my wife I would have a Polaris SxS before we ever got back into Jeeps. On the whole it will do more, and it will do it better out of the box. I don't even know how many hours and money I had into my Jeep to enable it to go slowly over obstacles that aren't meant to be driven over.

That said, my point still stands. I don't understand how so many people can justify financing one when you can pick up a used bike or quad for a fraction of it. I know most of the people around here that have them don't have the cash to pay for one outright.

It had been 20+ years and I had no idea. You can't ride with your kids on trails witha 450R.
I got a trail bike with a kick stand. TTR230. They will keep riding so get something you can keep for a long time.
If drinking is a major part of your day, of course you need a 4 wheeler.

This

My MX bike can go many more places than a quad can.
Because of track rules or its size.

Also bikes don't chase you down and run you over after you fall as a rule.

If you can find a decent 125 go for it. If it gets boring, sell it and move up.
or how about a used KTM 200 enduro bike?

Check out Hammerhead, they are owned by Polaris and are not expensive at all. They may not be powerful monsters but if you want something family friendly to enjoy with your kids, they are worth a look.
