The giant robot, built in South Korea, works by repeating the actions of its pilot sitting inside by moving its enormous arms and legs up and down
http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/secret-terrifying-13-foot-avatar-9484188 Scientists have programmed a monster one-tonne robot that can walk and mimic human movements resembling something from Avatar .The METHOD-1 machine is four metres tall and when it stomps it leaves the ground “shaking”, according to designer Vitaly Bulgarov. The giant robot, built in South Korea, works by repeating the actions of its pilot sitting inside by moving its enormous arms and legs up and down.In astonishing video the sinister machine can be seen walking across a laboratory floor using its mechanical joints. https://youtu.be/NCrBC_V92hY (there's supposed to be a video below, so I put the link above...) Very cool, but NOT a robot.
It is a power suit. This is the definition of "Robot" and what they did is not one. ETA: The walking is "robotic", but those arm movements are not. What this really look like is a Mech from Mechwarrior . ro·bot 'ro?bät,'rob?t/Submit noun a machine capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically, especially one programmable by a computer. synonyms:automaton, android, golem; More (especially in science fiction) a machine resembling a human being and able to replicate certain human movements and functions automatically. synonyms:automaton, android, golem; More |

I'm surprised it was south korea, not japan to be the first to get to this level of mech technology.

That works a lot better than I expected it to. Still tethered to a separate power supply though.

You all hit the nail on the head... this is scary stuff, but luckily it still needs to be tethered to be worth a damn. That damn Elon Musk and his super battery research will be the death of us all, however.

I imagine a small block V8 or two would be sufficient to power this thing, and it could probably carry enough fuel for hours of mechanized rampage. |

Wow.
Meanwhile, in Best Korea, their most advanced socialist engineers have probably just invented a consumer-grade microwave-oven with similar specs - only 1 ton and 12 ft. tall as well. lololol. |

Big robots aren't going to accomplish much on a battlefield, anything with it's head sticking up over trees and rooftops will be a piñata for anti-tank weapons. Man sized and smaller though, those are going to be mean lil bastards one day soon.

Give it a tracked mobility unit and see how much better it goes.

A turbo diesel 4 banger would do it..with on board generator..and hydraulics. Less chance of flash fire...saves space..weight..noise..etc |

When I see one running, THEN I'll be impressed.
And then I'll be loading mags of AP |

Looks like a good start. Time to proceed with the watermelon smash tests.

View Quote Yep, until that has a LOT more mobility/agility it would just be a target for everything the enemy can throw at it. Small mobile infantry type suits or exoskeletons that can allow an individual soldier to climb any terrain quickly and carry crew served weapons, that would be a game changer. |

I highly doubt Japan doesn't have something like this or even more advanced, they're just smarter about keeping it under wraps. View Quote Japan's population is dropping, so they would probably do better with taking the little Honda robots and giving them something similar to an M-4 carbine, along with a software upgrade. How many of those things could be crammed into the back of an Osprey? |

Now, develop these a bit more and weaponize them and you got something that could absolutely terrorize the battlefield.

If they have made this public it makes you wonder what the technology really is like.
|
|
If it only mimics man then it has limitations.
Once someone perfects a "real" bot that can replace man China will steal the tech. Once the reverse engineer it and mass produce them and put it into every factory what will their people do? |

Is there really a place for a bipedal weapon on the battlefield? Even if you could get it nimble enough to move quickly around and over obstacles legs seem to be an easily exploitable weakness. View Quote That thing would draw fire from anyone that could range on it. Sucks for the infantry guys around it. |

Needs a graphene battery power supply, hand held rpg proof shield, m134 in a drop leg holster, and a giant fuck you sword.

Is it self powered and structurally capable of being fitted with weapons and armor?
Didn't think so. Cool toy, bro |

So you can sit in the back of the battlefield and launch LRM's while I paint the target and ask for help? All my time on Mech Warrior Online is finally paying off. |

Why does anyone need a .50 caliber rifle or armor piercing ammo?

That works a lot better than I expected it to. Still tethered to a separate power supply though. View Quote It could easily be adapted to use a Diesel engine, and probably gain efficiency if you built in a series of clutches and mechanisms to convert the direction of rotational motion. |
