A defender, such as one of the linebackers, has the responsibility of covering the tailback,  and can blitz if the back stays in the backfield for protection.

I thought it was double helix.  Also known as two girls and a cup.  Also known as docking.  Urban dictionary can clean it up for you...

Some defensive schemes employ "key" blitzes where a player will blitz only if his assigned man stays in to block, thus keying his action off the action of his man. If his man releases into a pass pattern, then the defensive player will cover him. For example, if weak side linebacker has the fullback as his man, if upon the snap of the ball the fullback blocks, the linebacker will blitz.

Wikipedia says that.

I've never heard it referred to by anything specifically, just called a read.

Key blitz

Good riddance to paterno. You guys are still stuck with the québécois and Trudeau, Castro's son.

And you're assuming that they're straight man. Most of the time the outside backs have flats, inside backers hash to middle 10-15 yds deep.

I just call it a read or a key. You may have heard of an Indian blitz where a corner or a safety blitzes off the edge if they don't have a man to cover.

Some situations will cause an outside linebacker to trade responsibilities with a cornerback or dog, some coaches call CBs that line up on the inside receiver dogs/rovers. If there's not a number two back to your side you can send a blitz off the edge. The blitzing defender can either stretch at a 45 degree angle towards the sideline for contain, scrape towards the QB and play contain 2-3 yards deep in the backfield, scrape the edge and stay flat to pursue behind the offensive line, or their target can be the back shoulder of the player with the ball.

Really depends on the defensive scheme, what the offensive formation is, and what the DC likes.

This, depends on the coaching staff. We always called it a read or sometimes spy blitz

Also see it as a 3 roll. Outside LB steps up to line and spys a back and the strong safety rolls forward into LB spot

That's probably the most common name for that, the spy blitz. Not many backers can pull it off well. Requires a very quick read
