If you want to live a full life of 70 years you would have to live in the present.  In the old days 40 was old.

Pre-historic. 10,000-20,000 years ago would work for me.

Virgina frontier pre to post American Revolution. Would like to be born about 1740 and live to 1820+. I would serve in the French and Indian War and The Revolution. I would help drive the Indians over the Ohio River. I could take advantage of the prosperity boom of the migration into western Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Kentucky. I could live to see the Louisiana Purchase. I would love to get a chance to go west with The Corps of Discovery, but by 1803 I'd be 63 years old. So maybe I'll change my born on to 1755.

While time traveling to visit would be awesome, time traveling to be marooned sometime in the pre-20th Century past would suck. Hell in most regions of the world the 20th Century still would suck.

Most places and eras they'll burn you at the stake, or just think you're insane, so you'll get to skip the burning at the stake bit and just get chained to a tree stump so the local children can hit you with small rocks and rotten fruit.

You played football in HS so you'll be great in armor with a sword? Yeah no, that other guy has been practicing in armor and a sword to kill people since he was 7 and is built like the Rock; also while practicing to kill people with a sword he got over zealous one time and killed his best friend Percy, and he doesn't really feel all that bad about it, so yeah you're getting no mercy from him.

If you don't eat you will also die. Unfortunately a lot of things that are available to eat will kill you because there was no concept of safe food preparation, sanitation or germs, you'll probably get sick, which means you could die. Oh and Mexican public water is the only water available, everywhere.

Screw it the 1700-1800s wouldn't be so bad right? And you could use a gun! Yeah and get shot, which leads to infections which leads to death or again being called Stumpy. Also more men died in camp than in combat back then because of...well most of that shit above.

Like I said there are plenty of times and places I'd love to see, so long as I wasn't stuck there because a modern American has a very slim chance of living to whatever era he's marooned in's "old age" let alone the one we can expect now; the further back in time/distance from America you go the lower that chance is.

TL;DR version: One way trip to the past you say? You're probably going to die within a short span of getting there.

The 50s *seem* like they'd be an idyllic time but there was a lot of crap going on then too.

I never said that you'd waltz into a place in time and become a King, Emperor,etc. When you're there then you're there and subject to what happened in that time frame. You may die quick. I'd like to have experienced what my parents did in the 40's to the 60's as an adult.  I came along late for them, after my dad had retired from the military.  My sister got to experience some of her childhood while they were still overseas.
