In the same family since being purchased in 1870.

Probably not a whole lot - original owner was a Tennessee logger from the mid-1860"s.

Handed down: great-grandfather ---> grandfather ----->father----> son.

Son is in his 70's.

Polish out the brass until it's gleaming, chrome the rest and then find a black plastic stock set. That bitch would be tight yo!

First thing is sand down and refinish the stock.  Then reblue it.

Here's some reasonably priced ammo to go with it.  $40/round.

Gorgeous!!!

I wonder how much it cost back in 1870 in today's money.  It must have been a pretty high tech piece of machinery at the time.

perfect example of people who don't buy enough ammo.

I cant shoot my gun, cause ammo for it is extinct... they should have bought it cheap and stacked it deep, when they could.

Looks like you bid to $6500 and reserve was not met. That is a gorgeous rifle and knowing the history makes it more so imho.

Nice purchase!

I'll probably run a couple of patches down the barrel.

Wipe it down with a lightly oiled cloth and spray it down with Birchwood Casey Baracade.

That's it

Nice, high condition, 3rd model carbine.  Only about 127,000 carbines made and I doubt very few are still in that condition.

You did well.

Something like that absolutely could be done.  The only issue is that the firing pin is off-set, to hit the rim instead of the center, and that is built into the bolt.  Other than that, center fire or rim fire, there is no difference: the hammer whacks the back of the firing pin the same in either case.  Have a center fire bolt fitted, keep the orig, of course, and have fun with some low-powered, BP loads.

ETA: ask around in the Cowboy Action Shooting forums.  Someone will know of a gunsmith that can do the work.

He should SBR it and put an AR stock and grip on it with at least 4 rails on the front of it!

Thats exactly what I would do. As long as there's no permanent changes to the gun and original parts, it's a win-win

You guys laugh, but rimfire reloading is a thing.  There are people out there doing handloads of .44 rimfire.  .22LR kits are easily available.

Reload your .22LR!

I know that Handloader magazine did an issue on reloading the .44 rimfire.  Might be worth looking into.

Yeah, no way would I do it with .22LR.  But for obsolete rimfires like the OP's, it can begin to make sense.

Either way.  Very nice rifle OP.  Any reason why they were selling it?  No heir (or worthy heir)?  I would be hard pressed to let something like that leave the family.
