What is the best .223 magnum out there that still fits the ar15 upper/lower?  Is there anything necked down from 6.8spc or 6.5 that give 15-20% more velocity on heavier bullets?  Maybe a squat 22-250 with the rebated case head like the 450 bushmaster ?

220 Swift doesn't do anything that a 22-250 Ackley can't do better.

Since almost no one has actually responded to your question, instead trying to cram an ancient long action cartridge where it wont fit...

For the standard AR15 platform package, the 22x6.8 is about the best thing going. The WSSM is a non starter...almost obsolete in terms of OEM support, and they really didnt work all that good anyway. The 22x6.8 will give up about 100-150fps to the WSSM, but be much, much easier to live with.

Keep an eye on Nosler at SHOT show for the answer to this question.

You could go with an Ackley Improved version of the 222 Remington Magnum.
This allows the use of a standard bolt and I assume you could use regular magazines.

The above mention of the 22-6.8 is very interesting.
If velocity runs right between 223 and 22-250 that would be sweet.

22-6.8. Have seen guys claiming the 75g. AMax at 3300 fps out of 20" barrels.

You know those are great rounds, but don't fit in an ar15 upper/lower.  AR10 yes, but not ar15.

The 220 shines when hand loaded, for that matter I have owned next to no cartridges that do not perform wonderful when hand loaded.   So your statement is really a dumb one.  Sure you toss a 22-250 into the Ackely and fire it, accuracy is going to suffer , but you do get a fire formed case so there's that.

I have no use for wild cats .... They bring nothing to the table I cant do with something readily available at the store.

Just shoot regular 22-250 in a pinch. You'll still be faster than 223 and accuracy doesn't really suffer.

I remember a time when 220 was on shelves but now I don't see it anymore.

Accuracy does cause o the fire forming....     I still find 220 swift at the store when I need it, but I have enough brass I do not worry about it...    Thats the only advantage I can say those improved cartridges has IMO Brass Life .   However I neck size my 220 so it seems to last me a while, I did go from the original twist to 1 in 8 since I do not shoot the real light bullets as much as I once did and the original tube was shot out.  Those 34 grain Noslers sure do make short work of varmints ..
