From what I have read the results from males are much more accurate.

I am skeptical as to the accuracy of the results.

I am tempted to send them a DNA sample from my loveable Pit Bull and see what they come back with.

The wife and I sent in the ancestry one. She was pestering me to do it and we got it on sale for $60 I think it was?

The Army has both of our DNA; I'm still in and she was. So I'm not concerned about tinfoil assshattery like some are. It shut her up, cost me $120, covered her Xmas gift, and I got some nay nay.

I got the wife the ancestry one for a xmas gift. She already sent it off. Im still on the fence about sending off one for me, or giving it as a gift also. I'll probably do it. I dont care about the tinfoil stuff either.

My sister is into the Ancestry thing. Trying to map our bloodlines throughout the globe.

Called me one day all excited, saying she found out that we are related to Charlemagne. ...fo realz? Charlemagne? Ancestry just magically yanked an unbroken chain from 2016 to the middle ages, based on our last name, that just so happened to be a world figure?

I told her they only got it half right- we're descended from Charlemagne's stable cleaner.

I don't buy it. It's accurate for the first few generations, then tosses in a "John Smith" or whoever so it can dump your "results" into one of their couple dozen origin stories. Something cool that'll make you tell everyone about how wonderful the site is, but not so outlandish you instinctively reject it.

If you do the 23andme font forget to pay an extra $5 to prometheus and get a ton more information.

ETA: if you hAve crohns or ulcerative colitis you can get thd 23andme test for free

I have my DNA and my FILs DNA at ancestry waiting for results.

My dad sent his in and we found a living relative we never knew who was looking for her father

I'd do it if I could be absolutely certain that the results would be sent to me and the information would not be recorded or shared. From the research I've done this is apparently not possible.

I did the ancestry DNA test.

came back with what I suspected, well

Did find out there was less than 1% of Portuguese, my brother is still convince we've Italian blood due to a grandfathers middle name being Monzani..probably a porgies name

I did the AncestryDNA thing and it mostly validated our family history with the exception of the claimed Native American blood on both sides of my family.

One warning that I don't see very often is that AncestryDNA will match you up with relatives and tell you the degree of relationship (sibling, first cousin, second cousin, etc...). You could possibly find a previously unknown sibling or even parent!

One of my female cousins wants me to do it. Apparently if you have a blood male relative do it you can find out a whole lot more. I have not decided to do it one way or another.

This is what intrigues me. I'm adopted. I know the maternal side, but nobody knows the paternal. She was a bit of a round heeled youth and doesn't know who the father could be.

Did the NatGeo test. Came back Irish, british, little bit eastern euro. My wife wanted an end to the Irish/Fenian music, and I think she was hoping for French or Swiss. I was relieved. Tiocfaidh ar la.

Yes. It’s probably not a scam, but it’s a waste of time + money. We did have contact from distant relatives but nothing shattering.

I want to do it but I want a male relative who is closer to a particular branch of the family I am short on info on to do it even more.
I have our family fairly well documented on all sides going back through at least the 1600's. The Irish side is where it gets hard to go back before about 1800. There is one relative from that side that would be the best subject but I have not talked to him about it.

Absolutely nothing. I didn't do it but my wife did the 23andme or whatever. She let me put fuck face as the name and that is what showed up or whatever with results.

I recommend people do the family tree DNA test before doing ancestry or 23 and me. The latter two have language in their licensing agreement to reuse your DNA for testing purposes. Family tree DNA doesn't.

However, ancestry has the biggest database.

They all three have language that states they will turn over DNA when requested by law-enforcement. So, your childhood indiscretions may come back to haunt you.<img src=http://www.ar15.com/images/smilies/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

The Y DNA that males inherit from their fathers mutates rather slowly. It's possible to find relatives back before recorded ancestery in England. The trick is proving it. DNA testing can also reveal that great great great grandma was not honest about who she invited into her bed. So that 100% pure Welsh paper trail may turn out to be less than perfectly accurate.

All three have an origins testing reference sample, which should improve as time goes forward. But our DNA, unlike paperwork, can't be forged, burned in a courthouse fire, or given away to cousins who probably lose it. Genetic DNA testing by itself is fun, but works best in tandem with paper trails documenting births marriages and deaths.

And for the super paranoid, the lizard queen says you need to report to your body suit suppliers in the next 24 hours for updates.
