I have been ordering pizza and other food for 30+ years.  You used to give your phone number with the order, but they never called unless there was an issue.

That has changed, now the driver calls which creates two issues:

A)  I can see the front of my house from my office and my living room, so when the delivery guy pulls up I can see him and I would usually head towards the front door to meet him there.  But now when I get to the front door I have to stand there watching him take out his phone and dial my phone number.  I will wave my arms and yell out to him, but he is oblivious to the world, so I have to go back in to get my cell phone and answer his call, in which he tells me that he is there.

or

B)  I get a call from the delivery guy saying he is here, so I get up and go to the front door.  I then stand there while waiting for him, and a minute later he pulls past the house, then makes a turn and comes back, then parks, then finishes his text message to his friend, all while I am standing at my front door waiting because he said he was there.

This happens all the time now, both with real pizzerias and chain places.  I guess they tell the drivers to do this to make it go faster, but the system sucks.

Oh and before anyone blames me, I am a really good tipper to anyone who touches my food.

I've never had that issue, must be a localized phenomenon.

At least you have pizza delivery.  I live too far in the sticks for anyone to deliver.

I rarely get a pizza delivered without a call, my house is kinda fucked to find though

Say what you want about NJ, but the availability of good food is great.

When I delivered pizzas 5-6 years ago… I only called if the address was in the ghetto and poor lighting. I make them come outside before I exited my vehicle. I have to ask, you in the ghetto?

Nope, I live on a very nice suburban street and the worst crime in my town is DUI's and the occasional car broken into for an iPhone or iPad.

And when I did live in places that delivered, I never had that problem. I would have a problem with the pizza company calling me. Use the phone for Google maps if you can't find my house, and the doorbell and dog will let me know you're here.

There's great food in a lot of shit holes.

Quick question height and weight?

I feel someone who orders food often enough, for this to be a hassle, would describe himself as a "power lifter" on his POF profile.

Same here, if I want a pizza I call it in to pick it up right before I go out the door since they always say it'll be ready in 20 minutes...and it's a 20 minute drive to town.

Same.

OP do you have your house numbers well marked?  I have numbers on my mailbox and on the front of the house next to the door, but I've noticed in some (particularly older) neighborhoods that sometimes the numbering isn't that clear (mailbox on the opposite side of the road and no numbers on the house, etc.)

I call for delivery once or twice a year, it is quicker to just go pick it up.  "OK, that will be ready in 20 minutes sir.....oh you want delivery, make that 45 minutes".

Driver calling to tell me they are here would annoy me.  I called to order a damn pizza for delivery....I AM ALREADY WAITING FOR YOU TO PULL IN THE DRIVEWAY BEFORE YOU EVEN LEAVE THE STORE,  LIKELY I SEE YOU COMING BEFORE YOU EVEN KNOW YOU ARE HERE.

That is because of all the ignorant people who are in the shower, passed out, asleep, on drugs, or just too lazy to answer the door. Not to mention all the people that don't post numbers on their house. We use phones to more efficiently deliver food. If i had to play games at every address and waste 10 minutes knocking, waiting, calling and walking around the address in the dark, you would never get your food in a reasonable time. Some people will flat out not answer the door. The older folks are in general pretty good but some of the younger assholes I have to deliver do waste so much time and never tip me for it. The worst are the big city folks living in the college dorm rooms. I can call ahead and give them an exact ETA and still have to wait 10 min for them to make there way down to the lobby all the while I have six more orders sitting in the car. Never get a tip from these assholes either.

In general, I won't call unless its necessary. I only call ahead for dorms, secured apartment building, unclear addresses or known slow people.

I always call using a burner phone and throw it out after each transaction.

Just give them the challenge/password of the day and have them approach your driveway checkpoint slowly, with the headlights dimmed.  Problem solved.

I only had to escalate to "show" twice, when the pizza guy forgot the password.  After driving the same serpentine three times a week, you'd think they'd learn not to get fixated on the homemade claymores, but whatever.  The price you pay for letting someone come into your fortress.

Only things jersey does right are seafood (debatable), tomatoes, diners, and crippling depression.

In short, you'll be seeing me at the border with a saw, bugs bunny style.

No, in the country.

All I hear from friends and family who have moved away is how the food is nowhere near as good.  Bread is a big thing, along with dough (ie. pizza).  They say it's the water that makes the difference.

You hear from friends and family that moved away (hint,) that the food they grew up eating and developing their taste buds around is better than the new flavors they are experiencing. Ergo, the food where you live is the best in the country.

You must be a scientist!

Does nobody care about retreads anymore?

Stop being silly.  I hear from plenty of people who move here and continually say how much better the food is here than wherever they came from.

I know there will be incessant hating on NJ here.  And if you want to do it about gun laws and other liberal issues I am all for it.  But don't do it when it is going to make you look like an ignoramus.
