I want to get my pops an impact wrench for xmas, but I'm not up to date on what's currently out there. I want it to run off air, not cordless. Any go to brands or models that you guys recommend? I've got a pretty flexible budget for purchasing the gift, but i'd prefer not to go too pricey. School me.

Ingersoll Rand. Much better than Snap On...Snap On doesn't even make their own impacts or torque wrenches.

I bought one of those Central Pneumatic Earth Quake 1/2" impact wrenches from Harbor Freight not too long ago and it worked great. The impact wrench that came with my Campbell Hausfeld compressor would not budge some suspension nuts/bolts. I got the Earth Quake for ~$75 with a coupon. It was able to remove those nuts/bolts with ease. I don't use it to make a living but for home DIY work it is awesome.

Ingersol rand is the only way to go, used many diferent kinds when i was a mechanic. My IR Ti 1/2in gun was king by a large margin.

I just purchased my guys an IR 1" drive impact off Amazon for $450 plus tax. they usually go for around $900.
Ingersoll Rand is still the best for me. |

What size, OP?
My old man is getting this one under the tree. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BK770KU/?tag=vglnk-c102-20?tag=vglnk-c102-20 |

How much is he going to use it and for what? I've had and used most of the big name expensive brands as well as C&H, and the bargain brands. For general use i can't see spending IR money. You said you didn't want cordless, but even my mechanics are leaving the Snap On, IR, etc pneumatic stuff in the box in lieu of Hilti and Metabo cordless impacts. So much more convenient and still enough ass to break a lug stud on most any vehicle or trailer.

Ingersoll rand
I run a Mac AWP050 which in my opinion is a very close second. |

Really? I have 2 Snap On torque wrenches...so IR makes them also? If not, who? View Quote Generally speaking... ~02 older - Precision Instruments ~02 newer CDI it depends which specific one you have as SO has many like digi, dial, click, drive size etc. Snap On makes the head but the internals/body are outsourced. Ive read tons of BS here about Snap On tools, even when Ive proven it flat wrong, so beware with some of the info spewed here. It rivals "gun show" BS at some times. ETA: I think Sand_Man was referring to IR making SO impacts, not torque wrenches. He just worded it kinda funny. But case in point- SO impacts are absolutely NOT made by IR. Thats BS. Again. But IR is a quality product none the less. |

Broke a pitman arm loose that my C P or Mac gun would not. |

Lots of these in every service department I've ever worked in. Work horse for sure. |

I have nothing bad to say about my Snap On XT7100. Had it for many years and still going strong. Paid a shitload of money for it but likely won't replace it with another Snap On strictly because of price.
I'll likely replace it with the more affordable IR unit. |

I have an IR titanium in 1/2" and an Earthquake in 3/8". They both kick ass. Can't go wrong with either. Read lots of great things about the Aircat too.

I'd prefer pneumatic, and I'm pretty stuck on that. I'm leaning towards the Harbor Freight Earthquake, and the IR. |

Earthquake from Harbor Freight if on a budget. My Span On that has seen minor use over the years now free spins when I hook it up to my air line. Not sure why. Over priced!

View Quote The trigger plunger cup gets stuck due to the lube mixing with moisture from the compressor tank. The oil ( you did oil on a regular basis) gets gummy and locks the trigger in the open positions. Sometimes it's an easy fix put a bunch of Marvel oil in air fitting and let it sit awhile. Then without air work the trigger refill let sit then hit it with air, it could break free. POUR THE OIL OUT BEFORE YOU USE AIR. It also might need a rebuild kit, rebuild are easier than building an AR15 lower. OP MAKE SURE YOUR DADS COMPRESSOR HAS MINIMUM CFM/PSI RATED FOR THE GUN. 1/2 has a decent draw. |

What size? I have a 3/8, 1/2, 3/4 and an inch drive. Likely give up the 3/8 first. Vital to use 1/2" or larger hose on the inch and it helps the 3/4".

Anyone who said anything other than the Harbor Freight Earthquake hasn't been paying attention.
Everyone else will either have to step up their game or drop their price. |

Ingersol 231C
Used mine professionally for many years. Great price. Very durable. Plenty of power. Mac makes a version of the IR 231 in America for about double the price of the IR 231, could be another option. Feed it clean, dry air. Oil and grease it and they run forever. Easy and cheap to fix in the rare case they do break down. IR has been making this model for many years. |
|
As many others have said, Ingersoll Rand for the win......without a doubt. Mine have over 14 years on them, daily use....mechanic is my profession.

I have owned Snap-on, IR, and Artic Cat. I prefer my IR. The only 3/4" I have is an Artic Cat. I break bolts with that one when I need to.
|

Nitro Cat. Just broke a 9/16th bolt with one. Forgot to turn it down.
Best I have owned. Great value |
