Also, how much of a fuckup do you have to be to 'attempt' suicide and not succeed?

Had an assistant track coach at my High School attempt suicide with a shotgun in the mouth.  People who do this sometimes don't properly brace the butt of the shotgun and the recoil can make the gun move enough to just blow off half your face.

When the head coach wanted the tracksters to wear a black arm band in support of the POS I thought the school and team were going to mutiny.

Knew a guy some years ago who got up from his barstool, walked outside to his truck, stuck a .44 mag in his mouth and pulled the trigger. We were looking out the picture window at him when he did it.

The bullet exited his cheek and he lived...only to acquire the nickname 'dead-eye' from then on.

Looks like she wasn't inconvenienced either by the bullet, or by the fact that she took someone else out with her.  It's cold to say, but I hope that she had some time and pain to help her reflect on her actions before the end.

Have seen it a lot

People flinch right before pulling the trigger and the shot goes awry. Have also seen people try to shoot themselves in Head and shoot more up than through and then they walk around literally like a zombie until they bleed out.

Interesting reaction by the instructor

Crawl away, now if she's been intentionally trying to shoot him she could have finished him off easily.

He should have grabbed the gun from the floor and help her with her goal.

Do we have a link anywhere to story and outcome?

I'm sooooooooo glad the range I work at does not rent guns. The range down the road from us that does rent gets one of these every year or two and we have never had one.

It also makes me happy when a group of folks come in clearly without any experience at all and say they are here to rent some guns and I get to tell them, "sorry, we don't rent guns here. If you look at that wall there is a bunch of flyers from qualified instructors who can teach you the first steps of shooting and they will bring a gun you can use".  Nothing is worse than a pack of newbies brought in by one guy who shoots a few times a year and has no idea how to properly instruct safety and how to not shoot the walls and floor and ceiling and target carrier . One of us RO's usually has to step in a babysit one lane.

Good old Dayton.

In Cincy there is Target World, which apparently is where people go to die. I went there 2 times in a two-year period, and both times I wasn't able to shoot because somebody had shot themselves on the shooting range. Although seeing the prices at Target World, I can understand.

Odd, I've never heard of using black arm bands to raise awareness of people who can't hit their target while contact shooting it with a shotgun.

I know, it was strange.  That head coach was fired a few years later for stalking a former student.  He got off easy because he was a hero of the town.  Basketball coach with state titles, etc.  She wasn't the first one, but no one else would come forward to testify.

A guy who jumped from the Golden Gate bridge and lived said that the moment his feet left the bridge and he was falling he realized that every single problem in his life could be dealt with, there were no insurmountable problems except that he was now falling straight down and couldn't do anything at all to stop himself.

What actually happened there?    Where did the instructor get hit?   Why didn't he grab the gun while it was on the floor?    Looked like he was going to, then changed his mind.

Run and Hide!        It's interesting how people react to life threatening situations.

If there was ever a time to go hand to hand, that would be it.

I responded to a suicide attempt in which an 18 year old male stuck his Dad's 12ga. Remington 1100 under his chin and pulled the trigger in Mom and Dad's walk-in closet.
Apparently the barrel was too long, so he cocked his back to get it under his chin.  He didn't kill himself, but but blew his bottom jaw completely off, leaving teeth and pieces of tongue, gum and lower lip stuck to the ceiling-  the teeth were actually stuck in the ceiling.

He looked like one of Michon's zombie pets from Walking Dead.  He was conscious and alert.

Local doc told me about a former patient of his.  Elderly guy in his 70's who tried to commit suicide with a shotgun at home.  Put the gun under his chin while he sat in his easy chair.  Pulled the trigger and it blew half of face off.  The way he described the face made me think of that guy whose face was split in two on the motorcycle (you know the one that makes him look like predator).  He survived the blast, got up and went to the bathroom.  Took out what was left of his dentures, then called 911.  He waited for police/ambulance to arrive on his front porch.  He "lived" for a couple of days at the hospital before dying.

I took care of a guy that did that when I was an intern. Walked himself off the gurney into the trauma room.  Entrance wound under his chin, exit wound through the left eye socket.  None of the bird shot actually entered his skull.  Oops.

"I can't do anything right. I'm going to end it all right now. Goodbye cruel world"

BANG

"Owww. Dammit. Son of a Bitch. Ok. I'm really gonna do it this time"

BANG

"Oh. Sorry lady. I'm sorry. I can't do anything right".

And so on.

Those have been known to double (it's really fucking fast, too), with round #2 going through the melon due to the position of the gun after round #1 recoil.

It is possible that it was an accident, not knowing any backstory or particulars.

Is there anything in my post that implies I have been or anything incorrect in my first line?

He crawled away that would not have helped him against an aggressor. Would I do the same no idea. Reminds me of that guy that spreyed petrol all over the woman in a lift, she backed away actually helping him.

Should he have picked up the gun, most definitely for two reasons, one to stop her picking it up to finish the job him or her. And two to end her attack intentional or not.

Whatever she's a selfish bitch

I used to shoot matches there in the 90's. People were offing themselves in that place back then. Counter guy told a story about a dude coming in and rents a .38, buys a box of fifty rounds. Goes out on the range and starts shooting. He is the only one out there. Counter guy gets busy then realizes he hasn't heard any shooting for a minute. Looks out on the range. No guy. Knew right then what he was going to find when he opened the door. What cracked me up was as he finished the story he said "But it goes to show our reloads work"

Had some good times at those matches.
