Daughter is driving from Baton Rouge to Gatlinburg this weekend. Wants to stop for the night about halfway. I have worked in Birmingham, and the guys I worked with said "Never get out of the car".  Should they stop there and just stay in the hotel, or should they stop somewhere else (Montgomery, etc.)?

Hoover is fine in Birmingham.  Prattville is fine in Montgomery.  Stay out of downtown in both places.

North Alabama is the Huntsville metro area depending on which roads she'll be on and whether or not you know how to read a map.

Anywhere an hr out of Birmingham is fine.  I'm assuming she is going up i-59? Gadsden is fine but it is only 11 hrs.  Why stop for the night?

If she is coming down I65 in north Alabama , Cullman is a nice safe city, and right on the interstate, about 1/2 way between Huntsville and Birmingham.

I'd go I-59 and stay in Gadsden or Ft Payne, AL.

FYI
Walmart in Ft Payne, AL has reloading supplies.

Worked in Jasper for 4 months last year. Sleep Inn near I-22 is a nice hotel, but no where near where she should be driving from Baton Rouge to Gatlinburg, TN.

Florence is nice.  There are some good resturants and such there.  My wife grew up un Russellville so Huntsville, Florence, Muscle Shoals, Cullman are all nearby.  Good BBQ in those parts!

If you had the time, I'd suggest that you head south to Barber and stop at the museum and track.  That's going a bit out of your way though...

Vestavia Hills is nice, right around Hoover.  Hell, I'd probably just try to run all the way to Tuscaloosa to split the trip fairly evenly.

Hoover, a suburb of Birmingham. Shopping and restaurants where I=459 crosses both Highway 31 and Highway 280

Take a look at the Hampton Inn Birmingham Colonnade. There are several decent  restaurants, a bakery, and bar just right across the street.

Thanks guys.  They are not looking to do anything other than grab a bite to eat.  i did some work at CMC in Birmingham, and the guys told me not to stop for anything until I reached my hotel.  Flat tire, keep driving.  Roadblock, keep driving.  I have only ever stayed near the airport.  I think I will recommend Hoover.  They can take 459 to Hoover, then get back on 59 north of birmingham.

My office is at the Trussville exit on I59.  Couple of nice hotels and several places to eat at this exit.

Trussville would probably be best if they want to get all the way through Bham before stopping to avoid traffic the next day.  Like someone said above, any big name hotel from Trussville to Gadsden is fine.
