A billion years ago I got a Yahoo account and it's been my primary for a really long time.

I want to switch but I am not sure I want to use Google as my main email.

What do you guys use that you feel is secure?

I have my own domain and my own hosted e-mail server.

Plus a business e-mail account, a G-Mail account, and a Yahoo mail account that I only use in dire need.

I have Frontier which was given to Yahoo to run & I'm about done. I'm always having to sign in & re verify my account through their security on my laptop & cell phone. I understand they have\had security breaches. Time for them to fish or cut bait. Get your shit together Yahoo.

Doesn't ARF offer email services? Might be worth it with all the freebees lack of security.

I'll look into it. Will my penis enlargement spam be from hot blonds?

Hopefully not.   (blond = male, blonde = female)  Unless that wasn't a typo

Fastmail -
I was a Yahoo user for @ 10-12 years. I made the switch a few months ago.
$30.00 per year is worth not having someone watch every single email you send and receive and use that info to pump spam at you.

I'm in the same boat.  Have had my Yahoo account for over 20 years.  Know I need to switch but everything is tied to this account.  Where is the best place to get a new account that I can expect to keep forever?  And should I just forward my Yahoo mail there for a while?

Protonmail and tutanota are good options, as is hosting one's own email; but realistically, gmail, or most any IMAP compatible provider used with an email client like thunderbird will be very secure as well.

there is no such thing as total secure email.  your side might be but the side your sending to might not be.  also keep in mind that the nsa has "tentacles" in the big isp's back bone connections and grab packets as they come in and out, they will eventually build a profile on you based on what they get (since most email as well as im's, is sent in plain text and not encrypted).  the only possible way you would have absolute (even though private servers can be possibly be hacked) is to have a system that has absolutely no way of being sniffed is to have a system that has no way to route email via the internet but locally like a old school BBS or message board that is subscription based.  your honestly better off having a pony like express where messages are transferred by person to person via mouth to mouth.  there is no such thing as a lock that cant be picked outside of the time it takes to figure out what tools are needed to do it.

How big is Protonmail? I mean, is it likely to be around for the next 20 years?

I use gmail for stuff that matters and two yahoo mails for other. Yahoo is the absolute worst I have ever seen. An absolute pos. My in-laws have a business which has yahoo accounts. For the hell of it, I do their IT crap. I have begged them to set up oty accounts. Falls on deaf ears (since they don't have to worry with it). From by far the most spam, phishing, hacks, ads, etc, Yahoo just plain sucks as does the corporation.

Just change your password - which you should have done ~4 times since the hack.

I have had mine for over twenty two years and I work for a small company where sensitive information might be sent to my Yahoo account.  I have dealt with some pretty big hunting clients like a V.P. from  Zurn, the next time you take a piss at a gas station you will see Zurn you will see it on all the fittings, drains, and PEX .
